Kate Middleton Debuts New Royal Order at France State Dinner

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte arrived in the UK for their official state visit. Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed the couple at RAF Northolt. That evening, they celebrated their arrival with a state dinner in their honor at Buckingham Palace. For the occasion, the Princess of Wales took the opportunity to show off a brand new accessory.

Ahead of the banquet, Will and Kate shared a photo of themselves all dressed up for the event on their official Instagram account. The caption read: “Ready for what promises to be a wonderful State Banquet this evening in Windsor.”

For the occasion, Kate made a statement in a red gown designed by Givenchy. But the most notable part of her ensemble was one of her accessories. As People reported, Kate wore the Royal Family Order of King Charles III for the first time — the pale blue ribbon features a badge with King Charles‘ portrait on it.

As People notes, the monarch gives the honor to women in the royal family after they’ve been working royals for several years. Kate was also given Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Family Order, which she wore to the dinner below Charles’ badge.

Kate’s other striking accessory? Her tiara. Royal women typically only wear tiaras for formal events held in the evenings, and this state dinner most certainly qualified. This is the first time in nearly two years Kate has worn one, and it may look familiar. For the state dinner, Kate wore the Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot tiara — the same one Princess Diana wore for her wedding to then-Prince Charles in 1981.

After the banquet, Will and Kate shared a video from the first day of the French state visit on Instagram.

“From discussions on our shared future to moments of reflection on historic ties, it was an honour to help strengthen the enduring partnership between France and the UK alongside Their Majesties and Président @emmanuelmacron today,” said the caption on the post.
