What to Know
As far as members of the royal family go, it’s probably safe to say that Kate Middleton and her three children are the most beloved, so of course they were confused by the reaction they got at Trooping the Colour on Saturday. As they traveled in their carriage, as per tradition, Kate and the kids were booed by protestors, and the looks on their faces really say it all.
The boos from the crowd were loud as Kate and her children passed by.

In the videos of the moment that have made their way to social media, Kate can be seen riding in a carriage next to her youngest son, Prince Louis, as her older two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, sit across from them. Though Kate keeps waving to the crowd, she and the kids all have very unamused expressions on their faces as very loud boos surround them, as well as chants.
Often, they all seem so smiley in public that it’s pretty strange to see them this outwardly upset. Clearly, the boos got to them. And while the royals are usually pretty good at keeping their true emotions off of their faces, this time, it just wasn’t happening.
Anti-monarchy protestors made Trooping the Colour into a demonstration.
The boos weren’t coming from casual parade-goers; according to People, they were actually being made by anti-monarchy protestors from a group called Republic. Not only does the organization hope to bring about the end of the monarchy altogether, but they want to hold Prince William and King Charles responsible for being more transparent about the situation involving Jeffrey Epstein and the former Prince Andrew.
In a statement on their website, Republic said that it’s time “to end royal secrets and to abolish the monarchy.”
“There is a serious, democratic alternative to the monarchy. One that will strengthen our democracy and which won’t breed secrecy and corruption,” the statement continued. “That’s our message today: demand answers, end this rotten institution, embrace democratic change.”
Some people believe Kate got what she deserved.
While some people were certainly upset that Kate and the kids had to face the protestors this way, others believed that she had earned this kind of response — especially those who blame her for Meghan Markle feeling so out of place after she married Prince Harry.
“Kate is a big girl. She chose this life. Her kids did not. I feel bad for them,” one person wrote on Reddit.
On one hand, it makes total sense that people want to hold the royals accountable. On the other hand… it’s not like the kids have anything to do with it. Boo at the adults, sure, but aren’t George, Charlotte, and Louis innocent in all this?
