In 2018, after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot, reports that Meghan had made Kate Middleton cry during a heated exchange started to emerge. Later, during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex explained her side of the story, and said Kate had actually made her cry. Now, a new book suggests that neither account is completely accurate.
The disagreement was reportedly related to bridal party dresses.

Of course, preparing for a wedding is stressful. Emotions were clearly running high for Meghan Markle in the days leading up to her May 2018 wedding. Meanwhile, Kate had just given birth to Prince Louis in April. Royal reporter Camilla Tominey told The Telegraph that Kate “was feeling quite emotional” at the time. During this period of time in which they were both feeling emotional, they reportedly had a disagreement related to the dresses for Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry claimed that the Princess of Wales complained about Princess Charlotte’s dress just days before the wedding, saying the fit was off and the dresses would need to be remade, per Newsweek. When he returned home that day, he found Meghan “sobbing.”
Meghan told Oprah that Kate later apologized to her.
During her Oprah interview, Meghan said Kate “as upset about something” but later “owned it” and apologized.
“She brought me flowers and a note, apologizing,” Meghan said at the time. “And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.” She added that it didn’t seem “fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologized.”
Though there were no hard feelings, Meghan wondered about the press coverage related to the incident.
Meghan told Oprah that she has forgiven Kate. At the same time, in his book, Prince Harry wrote about how the incident was covered in the press at the time. According to Meghan, Kate made her cry — so why did British publications report the opposite? Harry and Meghan wanted answers and decided to speak to Kate and Prince William about it. According to Harry’s memoir, Kate admitted that these reports were “totally false.”
He wrote, “Meg appreciated the apology, but wanted to know why the papers had said this, and what was being done to correct them?”
A new book claims that both Meghan and Kate cried.
Maybe, in a way, both accounts are somewhat true. In a new book by Tom Quinn titled Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, a royal staffer claims that “both sides were really upset.”
“The truth is that during the discussions about the bridesmaid’s dress Meghan said a few things she regretted and Kate said a few things she later regretted, but it was all in the heat of the moment,” the source said, per Newsweek. “Both women were crying their eyes out!”
Though the incident reportedly left both Meghan and Kate in tears, the source claimed press coverage of the situation made it sound like a much larger issue than it actually was.
