It’s not that often that we get to see Kate Middleton and Prince William on the red carpet, but when they do attend an event like this, they really do make it count… but the couple’s appearance at Sunday’s BAFTAs (or the British Academy Film Awards) didn’t leave royal watchers very impressed. In fact, some people described Kate as “cold,” mentioning that it didn’t even seem like Will and Kate actually wanted to be there.
One moment from the carpet really seemed to stand out to people.
In this video that was shared by Vanity Fair on Instagram, Will and Kate can be seen on the red carpet at the awards, appearing to be deep in conversation with people who must have been their handlers for the evening. A member of the crowd can be heard saying, “your royal highnesses, is the monarchy in peril?” but instead of responding, the couple just keeps walking as if they didn’t hear the question.
Eventually, the footage made its way to Reddit, where people are pretty unimpressed with Will and Kate’s behavior — especially with the “ice cold” vibes that Kate seems to be bringing to the event.
Others pointed out that their body language is “off.”
While many people weren’t able to pinpoint exactly what was off about Will and Kate, many could tell that it was something, with some guessing that it had something to do with their body language.
“They are just two deeply uncharismatic individuals and I’m not just saying that to be mean,” one commenter wrote. “Their body language is so off in this clip. Kate looks confused and like she doesn’t where she’s supposed to be headed.”
Another person added, “They don’t look too happy to be there. After spending all those years trying to rehabilitate Andrew (‘Kate and Wills would rather be neighbors with Andrew than Harry and Meghan’) and it just blew up in their faces.”
This appearance isn’t going to do much to help the recent rumors about Kate and Will’s marriage.
With rumors running rampant that all is not well in Kate and Will’s marriage these days — including photos that suggested that they may not even be living under the same roof anymore — this rather withdrawn appearance probably isn’t going to help cement the status of their relationship in anyone’s eyes.
Not even a little hand holding? That’s surprising, considering how these two usually act.
