Some pet parents love sharing the bed with their dogs. Still, some royal fans were surprised to find out that Kate Middleton and Prince William let their dog Orla sleep in bed with them. During a visit to Duchy College Stoke Climsland in Callington, Cornwall, Prince William told a fan named Louise that he and Kate enjoy cuddling with their pup.
The fan recalled her conversation with William.
Louise had her own dog with her as well, and noticed that William was definitely a dog person. “[He was] absolutely in love with my little dog,” Louise said on Hits Radio Cornwall, per Hello! “He asked what breed he was and he’s never met one of those breeds — he’s a Cockerjack.”
During their conversation, Louise learned that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ black cocker spaniel sleeps in bed with them. “[William] said that his little dog sleeps on the bed with them at night, with him and Kate,” Louise told Hits Radio Cornwall.
Some royal fans were surprised by this.
While sharing a pet with your dog might seem normal to a lot of pet parents, some people didn’t expect members of the royal family to embrace this sleeping arrangement. One fan suspected that William adopted the habit after marrying Kate. “I always imagined Will deferred to Kate/the Middletons when it came to this stuff,” the commenter wrote on Reddit.
Another fan argued that although “having dogs in the bedroom may not seem ‘royal,'” it makes sense for Kate and William’s family. “They both try to project an image of normal modern down-to-earth domestic couple/family so it’s in line with their brand,” the person wrote, adding that “having dogs in the bedroom may not seem ‘royal’ but it’s very very country house posh people, which is what they are.”
The revelation also sparked a debate.
Royal norms aside, some people couldn’t get behind the idea of sharing a bed with a dog. “My germaphobe tendencies are too strong to imagine a dog on my sheets,” one person said.
But to others, sharing a bed with pets seemed like the obvious thing to do. “I’ve now got two cats and two dogs, all of whom are welcome to sleep on the bed if they choose,” another fan wrote.
William and Kate’s dog has reportedly welcomed puppies.
William and Kate might have to rethink their sleeping arrangements, as Orla has reportedly welcomed a litter of puppies. The Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed Orla into their home in 2020. Orla’s mom, Luna, belongs to Kate’s brother, James Middleton. So far, the royal family hasn’t confirmed that Orla recently welcomed puppies of her own. However, a source told The Sun that “mother and babies are doing well.” It’s unclear whether William and Kate have plans to keep the puppies or find new homes for them.
William and Kate shared a rare photo of Orla in honor of National Pet Day in April. “Celebrating the animals who bring so much joy, companionship and love to our lives,” they wrote on Instagram.
