This Is How Thrifty Kate Middleton Updated an Old Gown for the 2023 BAFTAs Red Carpet

If you thought Kate Middleton's BAFTAs gown looked familiar, you were totally right — the weekend's awards weren't the first time that she wore it on the red carpet. But the Princess of Wales did make a few changes to the dress (and the way she accessorized it) to make it look fresh all over again nearly four years later.

Kate first wore the gown to the 2019 BAFTAs.

As Page Six pointed out, the white Alexander McQueen dress originally featured floral appliqués on the shoulder. The first time Kate wore it, she styled it with a pair of Princess Diana's earrings, Jimmy Choo pumps, and an Alexander McQueen clutch, along with the Queen Mother's diamond quatrefoil bracelet.

This time around, the dress had a totally different look.

We can see where Kate had the floral detail removed on the shoulder and replaced with chiffon, but perhaps the most striking part of the change she made was her choice to wear black elbow length gloves as part of her ensemble.

If we didn't know better, we'd think this was a different dress!

She made some notable accessory changes other than the gloves, too.

In fact, most interesting might be her choice of earrings. Although Kate wore a couture gown, she paired it with earrings from Zara that cost just $28 before they sold out, according to Page Six.

She also wore gold Aquazzura pumps and carried a Jimmy Choo clutch.

The look isn't getting rave reviews from everyone, though.

In the comments on the Instagram post on the official account that Will and Kate shared from their evening, people certainly seem to have mixed opinions about this outfit choice, especially when it comes to the gloves.

"This is probably the first outfit she’s ever worn that I didn’t love," one person wrote.

Another was glad Kate tried something different, writing: "I’m proud of her for doing the gloves. A little edgy, out of her comfort zone."

Kate has always been good at making older outfits look fresh again.

Through the years, she's been known to recycle her clothing, often changing it up a bit so it looks fresh all over again like she did this time.

Regardless of how you might feel about her accessories, she definitely achieved that goal here.
