Prince William and Kate Middleton recently celebrated 15 years of marriage, but critics on social media are questioning their relationship once again after seeing photos from their garden party. The Prince and Princess of Wales hosted the Buckingham Palace soirée on Friday, May 8. Thousands of guests attended the event, which looked pretty magical—if you exclude the apparent tension between William and Kate (according to critics, anyway).
In photos shared on Reddit, people couldn’t help but notice that William and Kate didn’t look all that happy to be playing hosts. And while there could be several different reasons for that, some assumed that they’re unhappy in their marriage.
People thought they actually looked “miserable” in photos shared on Reddit.
In one photo, William and Kate stand side by side with serious expressions on their faces. Given that they were at a garden party, people were confused why they appeared so… glum. “why do they look so upset?” one person questioned on Reddit.
Some more sarcastic critics noted that William and Kate looked “so thrilled” and “happy and in love” in the photos. Because, yes, these photos did lead to assumptions about their marriage. One critic who tried to explain their solemn expressions wrote, “Because they are miserable…rumor is that they live apart…people are not stupid we know what couple (is) having ‘problems.'”
Some said they actually look most awkward and uncomfortable around each other.

While some people speculated that hosting a garden party might feel like “work” to them, or that it could at least possibly be a bit exhausting, others argued that the garden party itself didn’t seem to be the issue. In other photos from the event, William and Kate both appeared joyful. So, again, people made it about their marriage.
“They look so awkward when they’re within a meter of each other,” one critic commented. “Kate looks far more relaxed in the company of others.” A few people even suggested that they might be tired from all the pretending they have to do. Someone speculated, “I think it’s getting harder for them to even pretend they still like each other.”
Another critic described the photo as “just two unhappy people standing there, not looking at each other and looking as miserable as can be.”
However, that might be a bit of a stretch.
It’s not the first time people have suggested that William and Kate might be dealing with marital problems, so it’s really not surprising that people are looking for signs and finding them, well, everywhere. And although lots of critics felt sorry for the thousands of people who attended a party with miserable-looking hosts, other photos show them looking much happier. As some people pointed out in their defense, they appeared to be standing at attention for the national anthem in the photo that sparked so much speculation.
On April 29, the couple shared a family photo in celebration of their wedding anniversary. The caption was simple: “Celebrating 15 years of marriage ❤️” Unsurprisingly, critics had something to say then as well, but they also received lots of comments from people who were super happy for them.
