Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman’s Breakup Was ‘Inevitable’ to Their Close Friends

Fans might have been shocked when news broke on Monday that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are going their separate ways after nearly 20 years of marriage, but it was much less surprising to those who knew the former couple personally. According to what a source told People, the separation between Keith and Nicole was simply “inevitable,” and as sad as it is, it sounds like it might be for the best.

The first reports of their split surfaced late Monday.

TMZ was the first to report the news that Nicole and Keith had separated, with multiple sources telling the site that the actress and country singer have been living apart “since the beginning of summer.”

An insider said that Nicole has been “holding the family together through this difficult time” after Keith “moved out of their family home” and found his own place to live.

The estranged couple was married for over 19 years and shared two children together, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 14-year-old Faith Margaret.

Now, a source tells People that things haven’t been good between Keith and Nicole for a while.

An insider claiming to be close to Keith and Nicole told People that it’s not a secret among their circle of close friends that they’ve “been living separately for a while now.”

“People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable,” they added.

The breakup was reportedly Keith’s choice.

Another source made it clear that this divorce was all Keith’s choice — Nicole wanted to stay together.

“She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” the insider told People.

During this time, the Holland star has been leaning on her family for support, including her sister, Antonia Kidman. “Nicole’s sister has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” the source added.

Things seemed to be good between Nicole and Keith until very recently.

At the end of July, Nicole shared a sweet anniversary post for Keith on Instagram, including a black and white photo of the two of them cuddled up as Keith held a guitar in his hands.

“Happy Anniversary Baby,” she wrote, adding a red heart emoji.

Notably, Keith’s last Instagram post featuring his wife was shared in early January 2025, wishing fans a happy new year.
