Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson are no longer together, but they remain connected as co-parents. Additionally, Khloé is the primary caretaker for Tristan’s 19-year-old brother, Amari. But she insists that her decision to care for Amari has little, if anything, to do with her ex.
Khloé stepped up as a caretaker after Tristan’s mother died.
During the July 30, 2025, episode of her Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, 41-year-old Khloé explained why she chose to care for Amari after his mother, Andrea Thompson, died in January 2023. Prior to her death, Andrea was “the sole caretaker for Amari.”
Khloé explained that Amari is “severely disabled.” He has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and “can’t walk or talk.” After Andrea’s death, Khloé, her family, and Tristan decided that Amari, who had been living with his mother in Canada, would join them in the United States.
This decision resulted in Khloé being a primary carer for Amari. She also acknowledged that she has hired “two sensational caretakers for Amari,” and together, they work “to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how.”
“He deserves that,” she added.
Even though she and Tristan are no longer together, she still feels close to his family.
In addition to sharing her two children with Tristan, Khloé has a strong bond with his family. She felt especially close to his mom. Khloé said her decision to take care of Amari had more to do with her “great relationship” with Andrea and Amari than it did with her relationship with Tristan.
“When I met Tristan and his family, like, nine years ago, Andrea and I became such good friends. I had such a great relationship with Andrea and I would help her with Amari, medically,” Khloé explained. Even before Andrea’s death, Khloé was “very much involved in all of (Amari’s) medical appointments.”
Khloé has said she now has a good co-parenting relationship with Tristan, even though they had a complicated on-again, off-again relationship and he previously cheated on her. However, she would choose to care for Amari regardless of how she felt about Tristan.
“I also know how much Amari means to Andrea and she passed away because she had a sudden heart attack,” Khloé said on her podcast. “Me being in a relationship or not with Tristan, I still have this family that I’ve spent so many years with, that I have such connections with, that my relationship with Andrea has nothing to do with Tristan. Amari deserves my love and care regardless of where me and Tristan stand.”
Additionally, Tristan’s schedule makes it difficult for him to care for his brother.
Khloé also stepped into the caretaking role, in part, because Tristan travels so much. She explained, “Tristan is in the NBA, and he is in a different state literally every other day or every few days, and it’s just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes.”
Because Amari has “a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has,” Khloé knows that traveling with Tristan would be too much for him. “Amari stays in LA with me, and I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him, because it’s not good that he travels,” she said.
