It’s been nearly 15 years since Kim Kardashian‘s infamous 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, but it’s only now that she’s revealing a detail about their split that’s a bit surprising. On this week’s episode of The Kardashians, Kim was looking back on the engagement rings she’s received from her exes, but there’s one she didn’t hold onto: the one Kris gave her, because he didn’t want her to keep it.
Over a decade after Kim’s split from Damon Thomas, Kim married NBA player Kris Humphries in a wedding so massive it had its own TV special. Though she has since admitted that she knew she didn’t want to marry him before she even walked down the aisle, she still went through with it, and their marriage ended quickly afterward.

But the ring he proposed to her with was seriously impressive, featuring a diamond so big it could probably be seen from space. On The Kardashians, Kim described it as an 18-carat emerald cut from designer Lorraine Schwartz, but Kris didn’t let her keep it – even though Kim footed most of the bill for the ring.
“I was pregnant with North, still married to him and in order to divorce him, he said I had to give him the ring in my divorce,” Kim said, later adding that she bought the ring herself, though Kris “contributed a fifth.”
Once the ring was in Kris’ possession, he chose to sell it at an auction with Christie’s just a few months after the former couple’s divorce was finalized in 2013.
“The ring is indeed Kris’ property that he received through his marriage dissolution,” Kris’ rep said in a statement at the time, according to E! Online. “He has long-since moved on and is very much looking forward to a successful auction at Christie’s on Tuesday, and of course to returning to the court this upcoming NBA season as a Boston Celtic.”
In the end, the ring went for $749,000 – certainly a tidy profit, though at the time, the ring was estimated to be worth a whopping $2 million, so it may not have been quite the financial windfall Kris expected!
Kim also revealed that she did get to keep her engagement ring from ex Kanye West, and she already has big plans for it: She wants to hand it down to her oldest daughter.
“That one I’m going to give to Northie because she was with me when I got engaged,” Kim said on the show. “And she held it after and I took a photo. She was just a few months old.”
Though there’s a very good chance that nobody would turn down a free 15-carat diamond ring, there’s no doubt it will be particularly special to North, who has remained close to her dad in the years after parents went their separate ways.
