It’s totally understandable that any parent would have some questions when finding out their daughter is going out with an NFL player, but Kylie Kelce‘s dad truly had concerns when he found out she was dating Jason. On this week’s episode of her Not Gonna Lie podcast, Kylie revealed dad Ed McDevitt wasn’t happy when she told him about her new boyfriend – and he had a surprising reason why.
When Jason and Kylie first started dating in 2014 (after meeting on Tinder, of course), she had no idea he was a pro football player for the Philadelphia Eagles. This means she took a bit of caution to make sure their relationship was going to stick before she told her family what was up, but breaking the news didn’t go smoothly at first.
“My dad was very mad,” Kylie admitted while talking to guest Jerrod Carmichael on her podcast. “He thought, ‘typical athlete. You’re going to be a bimbo – perceived the bimbo.'”
The good news? Once Kylie’s dad and Jason were able to meet in person, he seemed totally reassured. “And then he met Jason, and was like, ‘Ohhhhh, I get it,” she said.
This isn’t the first time that Kylie has opened up about the early days of her relationship with Jason, which began while she was still a college student at Cabrini University. When she appeared on Call Her Daddy in February, she said that she kept her new boyfriend a secret for a “long time” at first. Her two closest friends knew, but she said she didn’t tell anyone else.
She dodged her field hockey teammates’ questions for as long as she could, but after she’d been disappearing to go on dates with a mystery man for a while, people couldn’t hold back when it came to their curiosity.
“And they were like, ‘Why are you being so sketchy about it,'” she said. “And I was like, ‘Because he has a job that’s kind of public. I’m not going to get into it.'”
That ultimately led to one of her teammates figuring out that she was dating an Eagles player, and the rest is history.
Fortunately, everything worked out in the end – and Jason seems to be on good terms with Kylie’s dad, despite any misgivings he might have had in the beginning.
Then again, this is Jason we’re talking about. What’s not to love?
