Though Kylie Kelce says she always knew she “wanted four kids” with “room for one pleasant surprise,” at one point, she thought she was happy with three. During an appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Kylie recalled thinking “maybe three is good” when her third daughter was about 6 months old. Then, something shifted for her and made her realize she really wanted to have a fourth child after all.
At one point, she felt good about having just two kids.
Although Kylie admittedly “can’t stand” being pregnant, she’s always had the desire to have four kids. But prior to welcoming her third and fourth daughters with former NFL player husband Jason Kelce, she recognized that there were some advantages that came with having a smaller family.
With her two oldest daughters being “only 17 months apart,” Kylie acknowledged that having two kids felt “great” in several ways. She could hold both of their hands at the same time, and she didn’t have to buy a bigger car (Kylie has previously opened up about begrudgingly getting a minivan). However, because of her own experiences growing up with only one sister, she wanted a bigger family.
She realized she wanted another baby when she thought she ‘forgot one.’
Kylie realized that she really did want to have four kids when her third daughter started acting more like a toddler than a baby. Talking about her third daughter, Kylie explained, “When she hit about a year and some change, I … had this moment of ‘Oh, I forgot one’ because I kept thinking like I forgot the baby.”
But then she remembered she wasn’t really forgetting anyone — her youngest daughter just appeared more grown up. “Then I’m like ’S— no. All my toddlers are here,'” Kylie continued on the podcast. “I had three kids. The switch that happened was when our youngest really started acting like a toddler, and then my brain started saying, ‘You’re forgetting the baby.'”
“I did not approach our third as if it were going to be my last, and so I have this mental block now where I think that one more baby is right,” she added.
There were other factors at play as well.
Though that one moment in which she felt like she forgot her baby made her realize she wanted to have a fourth child, it wasn’t the only reason. Kylie knew that she wanted to have four kids — and added that there are some factors that sort of “trick you into” growing your family even more. In Kylie’s case, her second and third daughters were both good sleepers as babies, which made Kylie feel like she could handle having a fourth child.
Jason has been supportive. The whole time, Jason simply told Kylie, “Whatever you want.”
Kylie seems open to having a fifth child.
Kylie and Jason recently welcomed their fourth daughter, Finnley. But given that she’s always been open to “one pleasant surprise,” Kylie and Jason could potentially expand their family in the future. “If we had five kids, I’d be like that’s enough, like we really need to stop,” she said on the podcast.
She added that she and Jason have talked about him getting a vasectomy. “My husband was on a podcast … recently and was referencing a vasectomy,” Kylie said. “I was like, ‘I’m glad you’re throwing that out into the universe.’”
