Mariah Carey is grieving two devastating losses at the same time. On Monday, the singer confirmed in a statement to People that both her mother and sister died on the same day in what Mariah describes as a "tragic turn of events." Though she hasn't shared any details about what may have caused the deaths of Patrica and Alison Carey, fans are already showing their support during what must be a truly unimaginable time for Mariah and her family.

This is the only time that Mariah has spoken out about the tragedy.
In a statement the 55-year-old singer released exclusively to People, she wrote, "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
Mariah's mom, Patricia, was a former opera singer and was 87 years old. Mariah's sister, Alison, was 63.
She went on to ask for privacy.
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," she shared. "I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
Mariah has been silent on social media since August 11 and hasn't shared any further information about the deaths in her family.
Alison's death seems to have been expected.
Alison, who lived in Coxsackie, New York, had been in hospice care due to organ function, and her friend, David Baker, told the Albany Times Union that those close to her knew her death was "coming."
"There were signs that she couldn’t go any further," he said.

Mariah had a complicated relationship with her family.
As People pointed out, in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah wrote that "a complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities," she wrote. "It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment."
Fans are already flooding social media with their support for the singer.
"Sending you all of my love and condolences MC. We love you so much! My prayers are that you are surrounded by love and support during this difficult time," one fan wrote on Mariah's most recent Instagram post.
Another commented, "coming by to send big hugs your way during this tragic time. You are in my heart."
