Mark Zuckerberg isn’t just a billionaire — he’s also an avid watch collector. And right now, his expensive hobby is getting him in trouble all over again. Mark’s rare $1 million watch is coming back to haunt him, and this time, his critics are seriously questioning why he would even wear something like that when Meta has had to lay off so many employees over the past couple of years. Yikes!
Mark’s watch is pretty fancy — to put it mildly.
News of one of the wildest additions to Mark’s watch collection is making the rounds again after he’s been spotted wearing it during recent appearances. Last year, GQ reported that the timepiece is a Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 that retails for $895,000. Made by hand in Switzerland, the brand only releases two or three of these watches per year, making them exceedingly rare.
He famously wore the watch during a video he shared on Meta platforms in January 2025 announcing that the company would no longer be using fact checkers for community notes on posts.
At the time the video was released, fashion consultant Reginald Ferguson told Fortune that wearing the watch to talk about rollbacks at Meta was “tone deaf,” adding, “The watch is not an obvious ostentatious symbol of wealth but it certainly doesn’t help.”
People pointed out just how tone deaf he is.
The watch is coming back up in conversation on Reddit this week, where people are surprised (but also, not surprised at the same time) that Zuckerberg wouldn’t realize that wearing something like that when Meta has regularly been letting people go is a bad look.
“On purpose? Is he just trolling everybody now?” one person wrote.
“These a–hole billionaires don’t seem to understand that they only got to where they are off the backs of working men and women,” another person added. “Would be shame if their entire workforce quit and people stop consuming their garbage.”
Another commenter wrote, “I don’t think Zuck has much empathy for the common man.”
Meta laid off 8,000 employees in May.
Just two months ago, Meta cut 10% of its workforce as NBC News reported that 7,000 more employees would be moved to working in the company’s AI roles. At the same time, 6,000 open roles at the company would no longer be filled.
“This is the most dynamic I have seen our industry,” Mark wrote in a memo that was sent to employees at the time of the layoffs. “I’m optimistic about everything we’re building to give billions of people the power to express themselves and connect with the people they care about. We’re transforming our company to make sure it will always be the best place for talented people to have the greatest impact.”
