Even though Princess Diana never got to meet her youngest son's wife, it seems like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are both doing what they can to keep her memory alive, no matter what they're doing. So although it wasn't necessarily surprising to see Meghan wearing a piece of Diana's jewelry during an appearance in Nigeria over the weekend, that hasn't stopped people from having a lot of opinions about the whole thing – and most of them aren't pleased!

Harry and Meghan have been touring Nigeria.
After the couple was invited to visit by the Chief of Defense Staff in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, they've been pretty busy. One of the events they attended was a reception for military families at the Defense Headquarters Officers Mess in Abuja, as People reported. The couple both wore linen for the occasion, with Meghan arriving in a white St. Agni gown.
Many people weren't pleased with Meghan for wearing Diana's jewelry.
On X (formerly Twitter), many royal watchers called out Meghan for the choice, with some people even claiming that the necklace wasn't actually Diana's because there are no photos of her wearing it.
"Please don't place beautiful, caring, compassionate Diana in the same sentence as vile, manipulative, gold-digger Meghan. It's an abomination," one person tweeted.
Another admonished Meghan for not bringing her children along on the trip, writing, "It is a little ironic that you would put a photo of Meghan Markle next to Princess Diana on Mother's Day. Diana was all about her children. Looks like someone else's children are as important to her. Archie at his age would have remembered this trip as he got older."

Though her dress is beautiful, it was her accessories that caught people's attention.
Meghan made a statement with her gold cross necklace at the reception, and as it turns out, it's not just pretty — it also has sentimental value. According to what a source told People, the necklace actually belonged to Diana and was recently gifted to Meghan from Harry.
Meghan wore another striking piece of jewelry that reminded people of Diana during the trip.
It appeared Meghan may have had Diana on the brain during this trip, because another accessory she wore during a different event seemed to be in tribute to her. It wasn't the same gold necklace, but it was reminiscent of one that was a style staple for Diana.

Diana was photographed with the accessory similar to Meghan's during a trip to Nigeria in 1990. It might be a coincidence, but knowing how intentional Meghan always is with her style, it wouldn't be surprising if this was done in tribute to the mother-in-law she never got to meet on Mother's Day weekend.
