It’s not often that Meghan Markle makes a talk show appearance, but when she’s promoting her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, she seems to have made an exception. While on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, Meghan opened up about her marriage to Prince Harry and how they’re still keeping things fresh now that they’ll be celebrating seven years married in May.
As Meghan chatted with host Drew Barrymore, she took the opportunity to brag a bit about her husband, confessing that she “did not expect” to end up with someone like him.
“I’m very lucky. I’m married to the funniest, sweetest, most charming [person] … and he’s an amazing father,” she said, adding that he is “so supportive” of everything she does.
And though they’re approaching what many people refer to as the “seven year itch,” it doesn’t sound like Meghan’s concerned whatsoever. Instead, she shared the promise that Harry made to her before they tied the knot in 2018.
It all started with advice that the dad from a family Meghan was once babysitting for gave her when she was younger that really stuck with her. He told her, “Meghan, when you meet your person one day, I want him to say to you the same thing I said to my wife when we got married, which is, ‘I vow to always date my wife.'”
After telling Harry that story, he promised her, “I vow to always date you,” and they’ve been living happily ever after ever since.
“We have this connection, I think, because we’re so committed to treating each other the same way you did before you had a ring on it, before it was locked down – when you’re just courting each other and you can see all the good and joy in that butterfly period,” she said during Drew’s show. “That’s, I think, what keeps things really alive.”
So far, it sounds like that’s definitely working for them. But even after this proclamation, it doesn’t seem too likely the divorce rumors are going to be put on pause. Those might just come with the territory of being married to a member of the royal family.
