Michael J. Fox Jokes About ‘Bizarre’ Mother-Son Plot in ‘Back to the Future’ Movie

Actor Michael J. Fox is addressing the one weird plot line from Back to the Future that fans are still talking about today: the awkward sexual relationship between Marty McFly and his mother. Michael called the encounter "bizarre" in a new interview, joking about why people are still talking about it almost 40 years later.

The 61-year-old cracked jokes about the plot while chatting with Variety.

"There's something about it that people still respond to because it's so weird," Michael said while being interviewed for the magazine's cover story.

"Not to be crude, but it's a movie about almost f—ing your mom, and she's totally ready for it," he joked. "Even at the time, I realized it was bizarre — plus Lea [Thompson] was pretty cute."

For those who don't remember, Michael's character travels back in time to when his parents are teenagers.

Michael played Marty McFly, who accidentally time travels back to the moment his mother and father first met. Unfortunately for Marty, he interrupts the moment that would've put his dad on his mom's radar, and she accidentally falls for Marty instead.

The time traveling teen is then tasked with getting his mom (played by Lea Thompson) to stop flirting with him and instead turn her romantic attention toward his father, George McFly.

Marty is eventually successful, but not before having some cringeworthy moments with his mom.

Lea's character, Lorraine Baines, aggressively goes after Marty, even looking at his underwear while he's unconscious (giving us the great moment where she thinks Marty's real name is Calvin Klein, thanks to the branding) and trying to set Marty up for a make-out session the night of the big dance.

Awkward mother-son relationships aside, all the actors seem to have fond memories from their time on the trilogy.

Lea even still has a memento from the night Marty succeeds in getting his parents to fall in love: her outfit.

"It was beautifully made, and made to order for me," she told People magazine in 2015 of the dress she wore to the dance. "It's got a low-drop waist, and the way it was cut was just so beautiful. And it's still in great shape. I've still got the shoes. The shoes are even hard to get on now — my big ol' feet from having babies."

Michael recently starred in an important new project.

The documentary Still comes out Friday May 12 and will showcase some of the struggles Michael faces as he battles his Parkinson’s diagnosis.

We have a feeling this movie will do a lot to raise awareness and hopefully help in finding a cure for the neurological disease that Michael says is becoming harder to face with each passing day.

While it's a big departure from the beloved Back to the Future franchise, we have a feeling people will be talking about Still for decades to come as well.
