What to Know
Meghan Markle has had to deal with a lot of rumors about herself and her family since marrying Prince Harry, but this one may have been a new low. One GB News host, Carole Malone, made a comment on air that Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, has been in “jail” before — a statement that is actually very untrue.
Now, Carole has been forced to apologize for her claim, but Meghan and her camp don’t seem to be very impressed with her apology. And honestly, why should they?
Carole’s comment about Meghan’s mom came up while talking about her dad, Thomas Markle.
I've just reported GB News to Ofcom for airing Carole Malone’s blatant lies & defamatory claim that Doria was in jail. Please do the same! Enough is Enough! Below is all the information you'll need to file the complaint. DM me if you have questions with the form. pic.twitter.com/4FMyJU5IkH

According to People, Carole was speaking about Meghan seemingly not reaching out to dad Thomas Markle as he was undergoing a leg amputation in the Philippines, where he lives, during the show Britain’s Newsroom when Megan’s mom came up in the conversation.
“So where’s her compassion for the father who actually brought her up, who paid for her private education, while her mother was in jail, who took huge care of her, and she’s not seen him in the latter years. Not just seen him, she’s like, totally snubbed him, Thomas,” Carole said.
When she was pressed about that part about Doria being in jail, she only pushed back harder, stating that it happened “years ago.”
Now, Carole is being forced to backtrack.
This week, Carole apologized on air, admitting that she had been wrong about Doria.
“In an episode of Britain’s Newsroom on Thursday, December the 4th, 2025, I stated that Thomas Markle, the Duchess of Sussex’s father, brought Meghan up while her mother, Doria Ragland, was in prison,” she said. “I believed this to be the case based on what I now understand to be misinformation I had seen online. I was questioned about the validity of this claim during the broadcast and I repeated this belief, which I now understand to be false.”
Carole continued, “This was a genuine error. I accept what I have been told on behalf of Ms. Ragland — that she raised her daughter and that she has never been in prison or jail. I apologize sincerely to Ms. Ragland and her family for any pain my comments may have caused, and I’m happy to set the record straight.”
Meghan doesn’t seem to be buying her apology, though.
At least, not according to the statement that her rep released to People.
“Broadcasters have a responsibility to inform, not inflame. This lie was conclusively debunked more than two years ago, yet it continues to be recycled by irresponsible commentators, causing recurring harm,” the statement said. “Ms. Ragland proudly raised her daughter and has never been in prison. GB News did not apologize voluntarily, but only to escape a defamation lawsuit — and it speaks volumes that GB News removed any trace of that apology within 24hrs of making it.”
Considering the fact that Meghan and her mom have always been close, is it any surprise that she absolutely does not play when it comes to Doria?
