What to Know
The Kardashians are one of the most notoriously wealthy families living in the public eye, but Kim Kardashian‘s oldest daughter, North West, may not have quite figured that out yet. When the 12-year-old was on Instagram Live with her mom by her side, she awkwardly made a plea for money to her audience, and it felt like Kim couldn’t shut down the situation fast enough. Oops!
Fortunately, Kim was sitting right next to North when the moment played out.

North was live on Instagram, talking to her followers on the account she launched in December (which seems to be pretty heavily supervised by her mom, much like the TikTok account she and Kim share).
As people’s comments rolled in, it was pretty clear that Kim was sitting right next to her, even though she was staying off camera. Then, North could be heard saying, “You should just show your face, because… I don’t know. I want some money!”
For any member of the Kardashian family to be asking for cash on the internet would be wild, but as the daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, it was especially surprising that North would say something like that, and Kim certainly seemed to agree.
As soon as North started talking about money, her mom stepped in.
“What? No, we don’t ask — no, no, no,” Kim can be heard saying off camera.
North immediately tried to explain herself, saying that it’s a “TikTok Live” thing, and she’s right. Creators can receive gifts on the app that can be redeemed for cash, but as Kim quickly reminded her daughter, she was on Instagram at the time, and that’s not a thing there.
“This isn’t TikTok Live, this is Instagram. So you were, like, kind of messed up for a second,” Kim said. “I thought you were asking me for something.”
Kim is now being praised for how she handled the situation.
In the 12 years since Kim became a mom for the first time, she’s received a lot of shaming for her parenting choices, but this situation seems to be one that just about everyone agreed she handled well.
One user on X wrote, “Rare W for boundaries in this family. North’s already too deep in the ‘face reveal = gifts’ streamer mindset at 12. Good on Kim for reminding her y’all got billions, no need to beg strangers.”
Another pointed out that Kim was right while also offering North (who is a literal child) some slack: “She’s a twelve-year-old girl that watches others do it all the time on TikTok; not confusing why she has the wrong idea. Kim did the right thing by checking her. She’s a child goodness relax.”
