In another post on her Instagram Stories, Olivia hinted at an experience that many parents can relate to — not being able to sleep at night while caring for a newborn baby. In the post, she shared her recent Google search, per People. She searched, “Why do newborns always stay awake?” and Google gave her several reasons, including that newborn babies “don’t understand the difference between day and night.”
“Hope everyone’s having a great night,” Olivia wrote alongside the search results.
Olivia welcomed her daughter Méi in September.
On September 22, Olivia announced that she and John Mulaney welcomed a baby girl via surrogate. The baby girl, Méi June Mulaney, is their second child and was born on September 14, 2024. On Instagram, Olivia reflected on having a baby via surrogate.
“I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter,” she wrote on the platform. “When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel. Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true.”
She explained that Méi “means plum in Chinese” and said she is “so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for making the journey to be with us.”

She has provided a fans with a glimpse into the first month of Méi's life.
On October 14, Olivia shared another update on Instagram. “The first month of Méi,” she captioned the post, which included several photos from the past month. In the first photo, Olivia sat on the couch, smiling with her newborn baby. In another photo, she sat on the couch with Méi in her lap and her 2-year-old son, Malcolm, playing with toys beside them.
Olivia and John welcomed their first child in 2021.
Méi’s older brother was born on November 24, 2021. Malcolm made his Instagram debut a month later, on Christmas Eve that year. “My Golden Ox baby. Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. Happy Holidays,” Olivia captioned a photo of Malcolm at the time. Four months later, Olivia called him the “happiest, chillest baby.”
In a sweet post about her first four months with Malcolm, Olivia wrote, “He wakes up smiling every single morning without fail, he loves bath time so much that he kicks his legs and looks around whenever he hears the sound of the tub filling up, his tiny fists are his favorite things to gum on and he squeals and follows along page by page whenever we read to him.”
“I, on the other hand, rotate the same three t-shirts and sweatshirts,” she added. “Happy 4 month birthday Malcolm. I love you I love you I love you.”
John has also documented his parenting journey on social media, albeit in a different way.
Though Olivia’s humor also shines through in her posts about parenting, her husband, comedian John Mulaney, has made jokes in many of his posts about his kids. When he announced Méi’s birth on his own Instagram page, he wrote, “We stole so much stuff from the hospital. I love my little girl so much.”
On October 14, he shared a photo in which he’s holding Méi — and wearing a watch. “30 days of bliss,” he captioned the picture. “I love this watch so much.”
