It practically goes without saying that holidays are a big deal in the royal family. But even after growing up in the monarchy, Prince Harry might have miscalculated how he celebrated Easter with his brother and sister-in-law. As the holiday gets closer, one of the stories Harry told in his memoir, Spare, is making headlines again, giving us clues about what was going wrong in his relationship with Prince William before their feud seemed to pass the point of no return.
According to what Harry wrote in his book, this particular fight took place in June 2018, a month after Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot. The newlyweds invited Will and wife Kate Middleton over to Nottingham Cottage for tea to try to smooth over the bad blood between the women. Their plan spectacularly backfired.
“Meg then acknowledged the tension among the four of us and ventured that it might go back to those early days when she’d first joined the family — a misunderstanding that had almost passed without notice. Kate thought Meg had wanted her fashion contacts. But Meg had her own,” Harry wrote in the book, per The Mirror.
That wasn’t it, though. Instead, what Will and Kate were miffed about had happened months earlier, and most people never would have guessed it. Apparently, Meghan and Harry had forgotten to give them gifts on Easter.
You might be asking yourself, “since when are Easter gifts a thing?” It seems like that’s what Harry was wondering, too.
“Willy and Kate were apparently upset that we hadn’t given them Easter presents,” he wrote. “Easter presents? Was that a thing? Willy and I had never exchanged Easter presents. Pa always made a big deal about Easter, sure, but that was Pa. Still, if Willy and Kate were upset, we apologized.”
This ultimately led to Harry and Meghan firing back with a grievance of their own in response.
“For our part, we chipped in that we weren’t too pleased when Willy and Kate switched place cards and changed seats at our wedding,” Harry wrote. “We’d followed the American tradition, placing couples next to each other, but Willy and Kate didn’t like that tradition, so their table was the only one where spouses were apart.”
One thing led to another, and eventually, their feud was spiraling out of control. And as we know now, the brothers haven’t been close for years and live on different continents.
It seems like a silly misunderstanding to ruin a relationship over. But at the same time, it seems like this was just one of many fights between the brothers (and their wives). Maybe one day they will all laugh about this?
