Prince Harry and Prince William’s strained relationship has reportedly been hard on people who are close to them. Now, James Hewitt has come forward to share how he thinks Princess Diana would’ve felt about the ongoing rift between her two sons.

James Hewitt said Princess Diana would be ‘concerned.’
James Hewitt and Princess Diana had a romantic relationship while Diana was still married to then-Prince Charles. At the time, Charles was also having an affair. Recently, on Good Morning Britain, host Richard Madeley asked James how Diana might feel about the ongoing tension between her sons.
“Any mother would be grief-stricken over the separation we’ve seen between Harry and Will,” the host said, per People. “Do you think she would have been able to make a rapprochement possible?”
In response, James said Princess Diana would’ve done her best. “I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it,” he said. “And she’d do her best to try and get them together.”
The ongoing rift has reportedly been hard on their loved ones.
Jason Knauf, a former communications staffer at Kensington Palace, spoke about the rift between the two brothers on 60 Minutes Australia on Sunday, February 23. Seeing the Duke of Sussex and the Prince of Wales’ relationship devolve has been “hard and sad,” Knauf said during the interview.

“Back when they were teenagers and the best of mates, the two of them were practical jokers,” Knauf explained. “They were a team, where they used to wind each other up.” Because they used to be so close, the fact that their relationship is more strained now is especially “sad,” he said.
“It’s extraordinary how much it could change,” Knauf commented.
Prince William has remained quiet about it.
William and Harry’s relationship started getting more complicated back in 2016 when Harry started dating Meghan Markle. Then, in 2020, Harry and Meghan’s exit from the United Kingdom and from royal duties drove even more of a wedge between the brothers. Harry and Meghan have addressed conflicts they’ve had with members of the royal family during various interviews. Additionally, Harry shared some details about his complicated relationship with some members of his family in his book Spare.
Prince William, however, has not shared his feelings publicly, Knauf said during the 60 Minutes interview, per Vanity Fair. “It’s very difficult to have this stuff play out in the public eye, but he’s chosen to keep his thoughts on it private,” Knauf said, praising William. “I think all of us who know him really have to respect that we should do the same.”
Prince Harry previously admitted his mom would probably be ‘sad’ about his strained relationship with William.
In 2023, while promoting his memoir, Harry addressed his relationship with his brother on Good Morning America. “How would your mom feel about your relationship with your brother?” Michael Strahan asked Harry at the time. Harry admitted that Diana would probably “be sad.”
However, he also added that, “I think she would be looking at it long term to know that there are certain things we need to go through to be able to heal the relationship.”
