Considering how close the brothers once were, sometimes, it’s hard to believe that Prince William and Prince Harry are still at odds. But maybe that’s because the one person who would have put their fight to rest for once and for all is no longer here? While talking to People this week, royal experts claimed that Princess Diana would never have allowed her sons’ feud to go on this long — instead, she would have been the “peacemaker” they need.
According to what the author behind Diana’s biography, Diana: Her True Story, told the outlet, the breakdown in William and Harry’s relationship is “a great loss for the monarchy.”
“We all remember the days when Harry and William were joshing with one another, and it all seemed set for their relationship and the future — that Harry, as Diana always used to say, would be William’s wingman,” he said, later adding, “Things were said that sparked the initial rift, and it’s never healed.”
But instead of taking on the world together, the brothers now live on completely separate continents, living completely separate lives, and if recent reports are true, they’re no closer to mending their fractured relationship nearly six years after their feud first began.
However, Andrew believes that this wouldn’t be the way things played out if their mother were still alive.
“Diana always used to say she had two boys for a reason — the younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future king,” he said. “There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them. If she had been around, they would have worked things out in a different way.”
Royal historian Robert Lacey told People that Will and Harry seem to be digging in their heels so hard because they each still believe they are right and aren’t willing to back down.
“They both deeply believe that they’re fighting for profound points of principle,” he said.
Meanwhile, a source close to the royals seems to believe that Diana wouldn’t be very happy with the way things are between her sons right now.
“This is the sadness of it — they aren’t supporting each other like they should be,” the insider said. “That’s what any mother would want — that they are there for each other.”
