What to Know
It’s no secret that Marjorie Taylor Greene is a right-wing Republican, so when a photo resurfaced of her consoling one of the rioters from the January 6, 2021 attack at the Capitol, it wasn’t a huge shock. She also defended the rioters publicly since the insurrection happened, so again, not too shocking to see her with Brandon Straka, one of the arrested and convicted men involved.
The photo, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), was still a little jarring to see for some. Greene has since come out against Donald Trump despite once being allies, so to see her comforting Straka after such a heinous event in American history, it’s hard to understand where she stands and with whom she stands these days.
The picture shows Marjorie Taylor Greene comforting Brandon Straka.

Straka was initially convicted for his role in the attack on the Capitol, according to CNN, but he was given probation rather than a hefty jail sentence. And, he once made a fake jail cell at the Conservative Political Action Conference or CPAC, which he used for photo ops. That might be the biggest issue of all, even though Greene’s involvement in consoling him in the photo is still icky for people to see, even now.
The user who shared the photo on X to remind people of the image of Greene with Straka wrote, “Remember when Marjorie Taylor Greene prayed over J6 terrorist Brandon Straka while he sat in a fake jail cell at CPAC? Because I think certain people on this app forgot about this.”
Someone replied to the post with, “Either she was faking her beliefs then, or she is faking her beliefs now.”
According to another user, “Oh, many are aware you can’t trust her. She might be saying somewhat intelligent things now, but she has a plan for doing this. I don’t trust her, but at least sometimes she says intelligent things now.”
If it wasn’t enough that Greene seemed to pray over Straka after he was arrested and given probation for his offenses, she did it during a performative show of support at the CPAC. And those who oppose Greene really don’t want people to go forgetting about it any time soon.
“Nothing has changed about Marjorie, other than Trump refused to support her, and then dropped her off a cliff when she stopped doing as she was told,” someone added in response to the X post with the picture. “She’s still bats–t crazy, and that majority of her views are problematic, at best.”
She openly defends the people responsible for the attacks on the Capitol.
Even though Greene has spoken out against Trump and she resigned from her position in Congress, some of those who oppose her views are worried that people might forget things she has said and done in the past. And some of those things include defending the insurrection that happened when Joe Biden won the election against Trump in 2020.
In May 2021, Greene said, per MS NOW, “The people that breached the Capitol on Jan. 6 are being abused.”
According to CNN in late 2022, Greene repeatedly tried to downplay the seriousness of the attack. She even joked about how it was organized, and she publicly tried to call it “just a riot” and nothing more.
She’s still feuding with Trump, though.

Despite Greene showing support for the January 6 insurrectionists and even almost embracing Straka in the picture posted on X, she has had some issues with Trump. In April 2026, she called out Trump’s former campaign manager Chris LaCivita in a post on X. She wrote that she is a “former,” seemingly in reference to being a former MAGA supporter.
“Go rage eat another giant greasy burger while you’re mad at me, while you type up another MAGA fundraising email that scolds elderly Trump supporters living on a fixed income that you’re disappointed in them because they haven’t scrounged up another $25 to send in to Trump,” she wrote. “Your kind are the past. The younger generations hate what consultants like you and your candidates have done to this country.”
