It’s been nearly a year since filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically found dead in their Los Angeles home. Later, their 32-year-old son, Nick, was indicted on charges of the first-degree murder of his parents, and as the case continues to proceed, his siblings have been cooperating with investigators. His sister and brother, Romy and Jake Reiner, have testified against their brother, and it sounds like they’re no longer helping him pay his legal fees, either.
Nick’s indictment confirmed that Romy and Jake have testified against him.
According to what the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to People, an indictment that was returned in July has now been unsealed, revealing that Romy and Jake testified before the grand jury.
The indictment now includes an allegation that Nick was lying in wait and that he used a knife as a weapon. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman called the crime “a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
“The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait,” he said in a statement to the press “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
Nick pled not guilty to the new indictment.
In June, Nick claimed Romy and Jake went back on their promise to help fund his legal defense.
In June, Nick filed a probate petition demanding access to a $1.5 million trust fund that was established by Rob and Michele before their deaths so that he can pay his desired lawyer, rather than use the services of the public defender he was assigned.
At first, Romy and Jake had agreed that they would “act as third-party payors” so that Nick could retain the legal services of attorney Alan Jackson, but by the end of December 2025, someone described as a “family representative” had let him know that “none of the anticipated third-party funding would be provided.”
At the time, the attorney said that Nick is “entitled to his own money.”
Nick’s siblings released a statement on the death of their parents.
After Michele and Rob were found dead, Romy and Jake issued a statement memorializing their parents, who they both appeared to be close with.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the siblings said in a statement, via People. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
