It's fun to follow along with the royal family for a lot of reasons, but none seems better than finding out what they'll wear for all the big moments in their lives. After all, Kate Middleton has access to a closet that most of us can only dream about — and Princess Charlotte isn't far behind her! And even though Meghan Markle is no longer a working royal, she still pulls out all the stops when she does make a rare public appearance.
This past year brought a lot more opportunities for the royals to show off their best looks, especially since they finally got to return to in-person engagements and even a little bit of travel. From what Queen Elizabeth wore to meet the US president to the whole family's ensembles at the London premiere of No Time To Die, it's been a busy year for the royals in the fashion department.
Here are the family's most unforgettable style moments in 2021. We can't wait to see what they pull out of their royal closets in 2022.
A Floral Moment for Elizabeth
Over the summer, Elizabeth met with President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden when they visited the UK, and as usual, she pulled out all the stops when it came to her attire. She's known for wearing bright colors, and she delivered on that front — with a pink floral-patterned dress and matching accessories.
Beatrice's Maternity Wear
Before Princess Beatrice delivered her daughter, Sienna, she was spotted showing off her bump at Wimbledon alongside her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. She looked striking in a black and white polka-dot puffed-sleeve dress, which really made her pregnant belly pop. So cute!
Meghan's Oprah Interview Look
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for their earth-shattering interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, fans couldn't stop talking about the outfit the Duchess of Sussex wore for the occasion. Her black Armani dress featured a lotus design on the bodice that symbolizes rebirth, and she chose to accessorize with one of Princess Diana's bracelets.
Kate's Purple Power Suit
During a trip to Northern Ireland in September, Kate wore a purple pantsuit that definitely turned heads. She might be known for her dress collection, but this was a major style moment for her in pants, proving that she should consider adding more pieces like this to her wardrobe next year.
The Family's Funeral Attire
After the heartbreaking loss of Prince Philip in April, all eyes were on the royals (and what they were wearing) when they attended his funeral. Kate's look particularly grabbed attention, as she was wearing a necklace that belonged to Queen Elizabeth with her black Catherine Walker coat dress.
Eugenie's Christmas Concert Outfit
When Princess Eugenie stepped out for the royal Christmas carol concert in December, she did not come to play. She wore a gorgeous emerald green coat with her otherwise all-black outfit, adding a touch of holiday-appropriate color to her glam ensemble.
Harry & Meghan's Global Citizen Outfits
One of Meghan and Harry's few public appearances this year included taking the stage at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, where they both looked pretty sharp. Meghan stunned in a trendy embellished white minidress, with her hair styled in a low ponytail, while Harry rocked a suit
William, Kate, & George Cheering On the Team
Over the summer, William and Kate attended the Euros to cheer for England — and they brought budding footie fan George with them. They weren't dressed like just any spectators, though, because all three of them were ready to impress, especially George in his dapper suit and tie.
The 'No Time To Die' Premiere
Although all the royals in attendance at the London premiere of No Time To Die looked great, it's hard to top Kate's movie star-worthy look — in fact, this glittery cape dress might be one of her best ever. It was such a gorgeous gown that even Daniel Craig himself couldn't help but compliment her, which says a lot.
Meghan's Birth Announcement Dress
When Meghan and Harry shared a photo announcing the birth of their daughter, Lilibet, in June, of course the royal mom looked like a total goddess. Our only regret is that the photo is in black and white, so we can't get a full look at her floral maxi dress.
William & Kate at the Earthshot Prize Awards
This just goes to show that an outfit doesn't have to be new for it to make a statement. At this year's inaugural Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony, everyone (including hosts William and Kate) was asked to wear clothing they already owned, and these two still managed to steal the show.
Meghan's Dramatic Red Dress
Meghan might be known for her closet full of neutrals, but this gown proves that she can rock a color just as well as anyone else (if not better). Meghan wore this red Carolina Herrera number to the Salute to Freedom Gala in November, and no offense to Harry, but who could compete with someone who looks this good?
William & Kate's Anniversary Shoot
This year's anniversary was a big one for William and Kate: It marked 10 years of marriage for the future king and queen. They commemorated the occasion with a sweet new photo shoot together, which included Kate wearing a pretty blue floral wrap dress with sheer sleeves.
Kate's Sparkly Green Dress
At this year's Royal Variety Performance, Kate wore a dress she'd donned before — but she looked dazzling in it (especially with those tight curls!). Her sparkly emerald green Jenny Packham gown was just as striking as it was the first time, if not more.
The 2021 Cambridge Christmas Card
In early December, the Cambridges shared the family photo they used for their annual Christmas card, and as always, it was adorable. Kate's green dress was both casual and gorgeous, and of course, we loved Charlotte's plaid dress too.
