What to Know
Duck Dynasty star Sadie Robertson is opening up about a terrifying ordeal that she and her family have been going through with their youngest daughter, 9-month-old Kit. On this week’s episode of her Whoa That’s Good podcast, Sadie revealed that Kit was given a scary diagnosis after multiple choking incidents that left her and husband Christian Huff fearing for their little one’s life.
Baby Kit was diagnosed with ‘severe laryngomalacia.’
Those who follow Sadie on social media already know that she has been in and out of the hospital with Kit, and now we know why. Early on, Kit was diagnosed with laryngomalacia, a common condition in babies that causes loud breathing when tissue over their voice box softens and falls over their airway. According to the Cleveland Clinic, most of the time, the condition resolves on its own by the time the baby turns 1 or 2 years old.
“It’s, like, their little airway [and] their voice box is supposed to be a little hole, but it’s actually going to be shaped like this because the skin is kind of bent and that’s what makes it kind of flop, and that’s what makes her sound loud when she breathes,” Sadie said. “He says it’s really, most of the time, nothing to worry about as long as she’s eating fine, her oxygen levels are good.”
But after two separate choking incidents, including one where she stopped breathing and turned blue, doctors realized that Kit has a severe form of the condition that needed to be treated immediately.
Her first choking incident took place in April.
Over a month ago, Sadie shared that Kit had choked while eating a snack in her high chair, which meant that she had to perform CPR and Kit was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
She thought it was a one-off, but it wasn’t. Sadie returned to Instagram with another update from the hospital in May.
“A month since Kit choked, and what we thought was a one-time event, happened again shortly after… and that was the beginning of discovering something underlying,” Sadie wrote at the time. “Praise the Lord that for such a scary and life-threatening event we had, it was a relatively small fix, because of the incredible doctors, and she is healing now.”
Kit is doing better now.
On the podcast, Sadie said that Kit has had surgery to correct the problem with her airway, and she’s already seen a “dramatic” improvement in her breathing and eating.
“We could not be more thankful when we look back at that,” Sadie said. “We’re like, ‘Wow, God, like you really did provide in the absolute craziest ways, in ways that, like, you can’t make up.’”
It’s good to hear that Kit is doing so well. This must have been a terrifying experience for her family, but good for her for taking action right away. Moms always know!
