It was obvious that three of Sister Wives star Kody Brown‘s wives weren’t happy with him for a long time before Christine, Meri, and Janelle all decided to walk away from their plural marriage one by one in recent years. But it’s only now that we’re really grasping just how bad things were for their relationships when the TLC cameras weren’t rolling. On Sunday’s episode of Sister Wives: One on One, it was Christine’s turn to share just how little “intimacy” existed between her and Kody for a lot longer than many fans may have suspected.
According to Christine, it was clear something was ‘missing’ a long time ago.
During the special, Christine admitted that going back to Kody marrying Robyn in 2010, she could tell something was wrong with their own relationship.
“When he married Robyn, that’s where I was like, ‘Oh, there definitely is something missing here,’ but at that point it was already, like, so almost over anyway,” she said. “But it wasn’t a real, true intimacy. There wasn’t taking care of me emotionally, romantically, physically, financially, nothing. I was independent at that point.”
Toward the end of their marriage, Kody told her they wouldn’t be intimate anymore.
After years of only having sex occasionally, Christine said she and Kody had “one conversation” that made her realize things were truly over between them.
“We had one conversation on intimacy and it was like, ‘Are we going to have any kind of intimacy, sex in our marriage?’ and he was like, ‘No,’ and so the next time he came over I’m like, ‘You’re done, you’re not staying here anymore, I don’t want you in my bed, we’re done,’” she said.
Janelle said Kody would weaponize his wives’ weak spots.
When it was Janelle’s turn to talk, she pointed out one of Kody’s most toxic qualities, which certainly seemed to be in play at the end of his marriage to Christine.
“He’s attacked all of his wives that are in leaving in the area that hurts them the most, or that they pride or that they value,” she said in the special. “For Christine it was devastating that he wasn’t physically attracted to her, and for me, I really, I’m one of those people who wants to be very fiscally responsible, I’m very about, ‘Let’s be responsible with our money,’ and so he wants to, like, sort of undermine that or try to undermine that for me.”
The downfall of Christine’s marriage to Kody informed her next relationship in a big way.
On the show, Christine said she decided to have sex with her now-husband, David Woolley, before marriage because she didn’t want to end up in the same situation twice.
“We’re going to make love first because I needed to make sure there was going to be physical attraction before I would settle into a relationship with somebody,” she said.
Christine added, “What we had was something so special and something so beautiful, we just naturally moved into everything. I’m a grown woman. I know what I had before, and I know what I want in the future. And so for us, once we made that step, it was like at that point I was already committed. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t know there was a commitment there.”
