More than two years after Sister Wives star Meri Brown decided to walk away from her plural marriage to Kody Brown, she’s sharing an update on where their relationship stands today. The situation between the former couple was pretty tense while they were in the process of going their separate ways, and now that the dust has settled, it doesn’t sound like things are getting any better.
Meri changed the plan for their relationship when she realized she needed a way out.
During an appearance on the I Do, Part Two podcast, Meri said that while she and Kody had acknowledged their marriage was changing during the end of their time together, they had agreed that their “spiritual marriage” would continue … but eventually, that didn’t work for her anymore.
“I think that Kody and I just had some issues like many marriages do,” Meri said. “You just have issues and are you going to work through them or are you going to not?”
He wasn’t willing to work on their problems.
Calling theirs a “roller coaster marriage from the beginning,” Meri went on to hint that she was the only one in the relationship who was willing to work on the former couple’s issues.
“I’ve got so many good memories, but there’s also not-so-good memories. And I think that’s normal,” she said. “And I think it just came down to the fact that both of us weren’t willing to work on it. And if you’re not both willing to work on it, it’s not gonna work.”
In the end, she doesn’t harbor any “ill will.”
Despite all the drama that fans watched play out between Meri and Kody on Sister Wives last season, it doesn’t sound like she still holds any of it against him.
“I don’t think he’s a bad person. I think that our values just don’t align,” Meri said. “And when we try to push those on each other, that’s when we have conflict. And so we will, literally, within the same week, we yelled at each other and we told each other, ‘Leave me the F alone.’ Then we hugged each other. It’s like, I don’t wish you any ill will, just leave me the F alone.”
She does wish he would be a better parent.
Now that Kody is estranged from several of his adult children, which seems to include the child he shares with Meri, Leon, she did say she wished he could do better and be more like the dad he was when the family’s kids were small.
“The way that he parents breaks my heart. It really does,” Meri admitted.
“He’s got children who need him and want to have a relationship with him and he’s not putting in the effort,” she added. “I can’t say he’s not, but I don’t see effort being put in where some of his kids really need it. And knowing him as a young dad, he was all about his kids, all about his kids and they were his world. And so it’s really sad to see the challenges that he and his kids are going through right now.”
