Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra have never been shy about sharing the ups and downs of their journey on Teen Mom. They decided to place their daughter, Carly, for adoption when she was born when they were both just 16 years old. Though it started as an open adoption, things have changed in recent years, and after an incident that played out on the season finale this week, the couple now say they will stop mentioning Carly and her parents altogether.
Carly’s parents sent a video for Catelynn and Tyler to watch on camera.
On the season finale, Catelynn and Tyler said down to video chat with Dr. Drew Pinsky, who had been communicating with Carly’s parents, Brandon and Teresa.
“Brandon said she is thriving and she has friends and she’s athletic and musical and she’s doing all these wonderful things,” Dr. Drew said.
He then wanted to share a recording of Carly singing that her parents had sent, but there was a catch: Catelynn and Tyler needed to watch it on camera, which they weren’t OK with. They said they would rather listen in private.
Brandon and Teresa refused to let Catelynn listen to the song in private.
According to MTV, when Catelynn reached out to Brandon and Teresa for the link to the song so that she could listen in private before sharing her reaction on camera, but they refused to send it.
Later, Tyler called the situation ‘heartbreaking.’
In a lengthy statement that Tyler shared on Instagram, he wrote that the first time Catelynn ever heard Carly sing, it became an “emotional” experience for her, so she was just looking out for her mental health.
“When we asked for the gift that their daughter wanted us to have, they said the only way to hear the gift, is if we listened to it on camera & that we weren’t actually allowed to have it personally,” Tyler wrote. “We were so confused & hurt about why they would say they have this beautiful gift to give us, only to never plan on really giving it to us in the first place (even though that’s what their daughter wanted).”
Catelynn and Tyler will no longer be speaking about their own adoption experience.
After calling their journey “hard and painful,” Tyler said that he and Catelynn would no longer mention Carly.
“As I’ve stated before, we won’t be mentioning our biological daughter or her parents anymore & that’s why we’re actually relieved that this episode is airing, so that way we can all just finally move forward,” he wrote.
