The Duggars Then & Now: How the Famous Family Has Changed Over the Years

In the more than 10 years since the Duggar family made their TLC debut on 19 Kids and Counting, we've seen them live a lot of life in front of the cameras. We've witnessed the births of too many babies to count, so many wedding specials, courtships, family vacations, and more. Now that spin-off series Counting On has been canceled, that's all about to change, and through the years, the family has changed a lot, too.

It makes sense that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's unusual family garnered so much interest so quickly. After all, not many people choose to have 19 children — especially while living under the sometimes extreme guidelines that they (along with their religion) have decided are right for them and their kids. And it's been even more fascinating to see how their children have changed and come into their own as they've gotten older, moved out, and started their own lives — even as some of them, like Jill Duggar, have decided that the Duggar lifestyle simply isn't for them.

Here's where the Duggars started — and where each of the children are today. They may no longer have a platform on reality TV (at least, for now), but there's no doubt they'll continue to keep us updated on their lives thanks to Instagram and YouTube.

The Beginning of Their Story

When Jim Bob and Michelle first started appearing on TLC, it wasn't for a regular series. At first, they just appeared on specials about their large family. But soon, it became obvious that people wanted to know more about their unusual lives, and it didn't take long before those specials became a show — though they didn't have 19 kids at the time!

So Many Bangs

Some of the biggest changes in the Duggar family have come from the oldest daughters themselves — Jill, Jana, Joy, Jinger, and Jessa are practically unrecognizable here with their bangs, perms, and outfits that we could never imagine them wearing today.

Mid-Reality TV Fame

In this photo taken of the whole family during an appearance on Extra in 2014, it was right around the time the Duggars were at their peak popularity — and right before 19 Kids & Counting would become Counting On after the floodgates would open about Josh Duggar's scandals. A simpler time for the family, for sure.

Josh Today

Josh has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons these days. After his federal arrest on child pornography charges in April 2021, Josh is currently out on bail and awaiting his trial, which is set to begin in November. He is still married to Anna, and together they have six kids (with another daughter on the way).

John David Today

Though John David once joked that he was a "bachelor 'til the rapture," that's not true anymore! He's been married to his wife, Abbie, since November 2018, and they have a daughter, Grace. They seem to enjoy obsessing over planes together, since Abbie has gotten her pilot's license just like John.

Jana Today

At 31 years old, Jana Duggar is still single and living at home with her parents, but fans suspect that she probably has a courtship in the works with family friend Stephen Wissmann that she's keeping under wraps. In the meantime, she seems to enjoy gardening and working on DIY projects around the house.

Jill Today

Jill has been estranged from parents Jim Bob and Michelle for a while now, but she usually doesn't let that stop her from keeping a good relationship with her siblings — and she seems really happy after distancing herself from a situation that was unhealthy for her. She's married to Derick Dillard, and they have two sons, Israel and Samuel.

Jessa Today

Jessa is all grown up, and well on her way to creating a big family of her own. She's married to Ben Seewald, and is a stay-at-home mom to four kids: sons Spurgeon and Henry, and daughters Ivy and Fern. She frequently keeps fans updated via her YouTube channel.

Jinger Today

Of all the Duggar kids, Jinger might be the one who has made the most changes in her life. She and her pastor husband Jeremy Vuolo have made their home in Los Angeles, and they share two daughters, Felicity and Evangeline. Jinger has gone against the Duggar dress code and makes her own rules, even rocking shorts and tank tops when she sees fit.

Joseph Today

Joseph is another happily married Duggar (and dad) to add to the list. The third-oldest son, Joseph is married to Kendra Caldwell, and they have three children: Garrett, Addison, and Brooklyn (who joined their family in 2021). Since Kendra also comes from a big, close-knit family, they seem to have so much in common.

Josiah Today

Josiah and his wife, Lauren Swanson, have been taking a social media break for almost a year, so it's hard to say exactly what they've been up to. But as far as we know, they appear to be enjoying life as parents to their adorable daughter, Bella.

Joy-Anna Today

Joy has grown up so much since we saw her running around barefoot in the backyard with her brothers! Now she's married to Austin Forsyth, and the two of them make quite a team with their business flipping houses. They also have two children, son Gideon and daughter Evelyn.

Jedidiah Today

Jedidiah — who most often goes by Jed — has been trying to break into politics, but right now, it seems like he's focusing on starting this new chapter with his wife. In early 2021, he quietly married Katey Nakatsu, filling fans in on his wedding after the knot had officially been tied.

Jeremiah Today

Jed might be married, but his twin brother, Jeremiah, is still a bachelor. As far as we can tell, Jed, who is now 22, is enjoying the single life while working in construction and house flipping — and also flying planes, like some of his brothers (including John David) do.

Jason Today

Right behind Jim Bob and Michelle's second set of twins is Jason, who is now 21. Like big brother Jeremiah, Jason is also single, and he seems to spend most of his time hanging out with his brothers and working with his business, Buildmaster Construction.

James Today

Like many of his older brothers, James — who is also single at 20 years old — seems to love being outdoors and working on construction projects, as well as hanging out with his family. He's not too active on social media, so we don't know what else he's been up to lately. Any courtships in your future, James?

Justin Today

Though he definitely raised a few eyebrows in the process, we can officially say that 18-year-old Justin is a married man. In early 2021, he married Claire Spivey, a 19-year-old family friend of the Duggars, and they seem to be very happy together living in Texas near her family.

Jackson Today

It's hard to believe that Jackson is already 17 when he was always the sassy little brother on 19 Kids & Counting, but he's practically a grown-up now! He doesn't have his own Instagram account yet, but we're counting down the days until he can share his updates with the world.

Johannah Today

Johannah was still a toddler (and the second youngest) when Jim Bob and Michelle's show — originally 17 Kids and Counting — first premiered, but now she's a full-fledged teenager and growing up so fast. She looks so much like her older sisters already, especially Joy-Anna.

Jennifer Today

Another Duggar we met as a baby is Jennifer, and now she's a teenager, too! According to her parents' description of her, she's a sweetheart who loves babies and spending time with her family, not that we'd expect anything less. Her siblings really seem to adore her.

Jordyn Today

Now we're down to the second-youngest Duggar: Jordyn. She's 12 and next in line to become a teenager (let's hope her parents are ready). We don't get to see enough of her on social media, but hopefully that will change soon, especially since there's no more Counting On to keep us updated.

Josie Today

Josie certainly had a difficult start to life when she was born when Michelle was just 25 weeks pregnant. But she showed how much of a fighter she was right away, and now she's a healthy 11-year-old who the family truly treasures. We can't wait to continue to see her grow.
