A moment Tom Brady shared with his 13-year-old daughter over the weekend is going viral, but probably not for the reason he hoped. When he and Vivian were caught on camera in the audience at the World Cup, they showed off their adorable secret handshake. But there’s just one problem: Not everyone found it as endearing as Tom was probably hoping they would.

As multiple outlets including People reported, Tom and his kids, Vivian, Jack, and Benjamin, attended the match between Brazil and Morocco on Saturday, June 13 — an appropriate game for them to check out, since Vivian and Benjamin’s mom is Tom’s ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen, is Brazilian, making their children half Brazilian, too.
While the cameras were on Tom and Vivian in the stands, he tapped his daughter and held his hand out, and she knew what to do. Their secret father-daughter handshake was actually really cute, if you take it at face value. And that look on Vivian’s face says it all: Even if you’re Tom Brady, you’re still going to embarrass your teenage daughter in public. It’s inevitable.
If Tom was trying to charm the audience, it didn’t work.
Tom clearly knew the cameras were on him at the moment he asked Vivian to do the handshake with him, and maybe he just wanted to share a goofy moment with his daughter. But some people online are convinced he’s simply trying too hard and found it all a bit cringe.
“So lame,” one sports fan on X wrote in response to the video. “If you have a special handshake with your kid then you’ve failed as a parent. Reeks of divorced dad energy.”
“That’s the look of a daughter that thinks her dad is lame,” one person wrote (but again, to be fair, it would be hard to find a 13-year-old girl who didn’t think her dad was lame, so that one isn’t all on Tom).
Others called him the “ultimate cool dad.”
While (obviously) not everyone was charmed by the moment, some people did think it was kind of sweet — and many also pointed out exactly how much she looks like her supermodel mom these days, which is so true.
“Stop making me like Tom,” one person posted. “This is fantastic.”
At least from what Tom shares on social media, it seems like he and Vivian do have a pretty good relationship, so this probably was just a sweet daddy daughter handshake that the world got to witness. They definitely practiced it ahead of time, which means Vivian had to be a little willing to do something silly with her dad. That says a lot!
