What to Know
On Thursday, Meghan Markle made a surprise visit with patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles — something that many royal family members have been known to do. Despite how excited some of the kids being treated there (and their parents) were to see her there, some online trolls have had very different ideas — and some have even chosen to take it out on the parents themselves. One mom whose sick child was hospitalized and able to meet Meghan is speaking out, because at this point, enough is enough.
Meghan’s visit included spending time with patients who weren’t able to leave their rooms.
As People reported, Meghan visited the hospital as part of its Make March Matter mission, which runs all month. After hanging out with patients who were painting watercolor pictures, she then stopped by the rooms of kids who weren’t able to leave their beds to participate in the activity.
“Today we were honored to welcome LA’s own @meghan, Duchess of Sussex, to CHLA’s Creative Oasis, where she spent time painting alongside our incredible patients,” said the hospital’s Instagram post. “These special moments are a reminder of how powerful creativity can be in fostering joy, connection, and healing.”
Trolls didn’t hold back when it comes to how they feel about Meghan’s visit.
When Extra shared a photo of Meghan posing with patients on their official Instagram account, all of the trolls came out of the woodwork — yes, despite the fact that she was doing something really kind for sick kids and their parents.
“Did she visit her father?” one commenter demanded, while another wrote, “Do it without the photographers in tow.”
And after one mom commented on the post to point out that one of the photos featured her daughter, Sophie, those trolls got even worse, with one responding to her comment by writing, “shame on you for letting your child be used for that grifters self promotion.”
Now, the mom is speaking out against these online trolls.
Sharing a screenshot of Extra‘s post, Sophie’s mom responded to the hateful comments about Meghan, defending the duchess in the process. After coping with a brain cancer diagnosis, why couldn’t total strangers just let Sophie and her family enjoy this?
“She was warm, kind, and incredibly attentive with Soph. After a week where Sophie wasn’t even allowed to leave her hospital room and had only one visitor, that moment meant more to us than words can say,” Sophie’s mom wrote. “When Sophie went back to school, the kids were calling her a celebrity because they had seen the news. Watching her light up telling us that story was the real headline for us.”
Sophie’s mom added, “It’s easy to judge moments from the outside, but what we experienced was simply kindness. And kindness — especially in a children’s hospital that’s trying to raise money for sick kids — matters more than anything.”
Plenty of people have strong opinions about Meghan, and that’s their prerogative… but can we leave sick kids out of it?
