What to Know
If you have to go into a spiel explaining your joke, it might not be the right one, my guy. That’s what happened to Donald Trump when he shared his nickname for Democrats. He apparently thought it was so clever he had to double down on it and explain why he bestowed a nickname on the opposing political party.
But Trump is no stranger to doling out nicknames and trying to seem more enigmatic than he really is. Sleepy Joe for Joe Biden immediately comes to mind for many, but there are other nicknames that Trump came up with over the years for almost anyone in direct opposition of him. Now, he has a blanket term for all Democrats.
Trump’s nickname for Democrats could be better.
Trump: Dumocrats. They’re dumb. It’s d-u-m. I got rid of the b. So, you’re only changing one letter. E goes and the U comes. pic.twitter.com/KUr1yKC8RW

In speaking with Fox News, Trump proudly revealed his nickname for Democrats: Dumocrats. Yes, that’s right, with that exact spelling and all.
“Dumocrats. They’re dumb,” Trump explained. “It’s d-u-m. I got rid of the B. So, you’re only changing one letter. E goes and the U comes.” He also said that Democrats are “defective.” That must be why, according to Trump, Democrats are so stupid that they don’t even qualify to be called “dumb” with the correct spelling of the word.
But, in the grand scheme of things, his nickname could be a little more clever. It’s also not totally clear why he dropped the “B.” There are so many other directions Trump could have taken it other than the easy road to a cheap shot. But this is Trump, after all, and some of his critics weren’t totally surprised by the nickname or the fact that Trump appears to be so proud of it.
People made fun of him for having to explain the joke.

When the Fox News clip was shared on X (formerly Twitter), users responded to the post to say that they didn’t see the humor in Trump’s nickname for Democrats. And the fact that he had to actually break down his little joke just added to the criticism of his so-called joke at the expense of a political party.
“There is nothing more pathetic than a man explaining his joke,” a user on X wrote.
Someone also commented, “He has to congratulate himself for everything, even his dumb as f–k jokes. There truly is nothing more dangerous than an idiot who thinks he’s a genius.”
“Man, that’s genius!! It was there the whole time and no-one saw it but Trump!! Wow, that’s 6D chess. Just one letter! The man’s a complete genius!! How’s Iran going? Gas prices Ok?” a user also wrote on X.
Others called out Trump for insulting people and bullying them like a young child in elementary school. Most don’t see the humor in the nickname he came up with. And they see even less humor in the fact that the president came up with it.
“He is not a victim,” an X user pointed out. “He likes to blame everyone for his mistakes, but this is all him. Calling people names does not change the fact that you are hurting this country for personal profit.”
He came up with other nicknames over the years.

“For years, I called him Crooked Joe.
Then I’d go back and forth, Sleepy Joe, Crooked Joe.
Which is better?
Sleepy Joe?
Crooked Joe?” https://t.co/ku7tbQSa0I pic.twitter.com/DBuDggvoE7
Trump once called Kim Jong-un “little rocket man,” likely as a way to mock him regarding military missiles. He also referred to George Stephanopoulos as George Slopadopolus. Which, to be fair, is a lot more clever than Dumocrats. Even calling Apple CEO Tim Cook “Tim Apple” has a bit more meat to it. But really, no one is here for any of Trump’s nicknames for foreign leaders and people in the media.
