Video of David Foster Saying Katharine McPhee Was ‘Fat’ When They First Met Outrages Fans

David Foster and Katharine McPhee have been married for five years, but they go back a lot farther than that. The couple first met in 2006, when Katharine competed on American Idol and David was a mentor to contestants on the show. A lot has changed since then, and now, a clip of David and Katharine reminiscing is going viral for all the wrong reasons. In the video, David says Katharine was "fat" when they first met, and people aren't happy.

A video that went viral earlier this year is making the rounds again.

The video shows David and Katharine performing together on stage, where they're talking about their first meeting.

“You may not know we met 17, almost 18 years ago when I was a little chubby and cheerful contestant on ‘American Idol,'” Katharine says in the clip.

The screen then shows a photo of Katharine on 'American Idol.'

Considering that she was just 21 years old at the time, of course she looks different today at 40 — a point that David really emphasizes in the clip.

“Oh, yeah — you were fat,” he says as he continues to play the piano.

Katharine shoots back, “I was a little chubby, OK? I was just young.”

People are fuming about David's remarks.

"This made my heart hurt. This beautiful girl was NEVER fat," one person wrote. "You don’t call your wife fat. As a joke or serious."

Another commenter believed that David's attitude might have influenced Gigi and Bella Hadid while John was married to their mom, Yolanda, writing, "I know Bella and Gigi went through it at that house."

His comment seems especially egregious knowing Katharine's backstory.

Katharine has spoken out about her battle with bulimia for five years, starting in childhood, and finally sought treatment when she realized the damage it could do to her vocal chords could be detrimental to her singing career.

"Yeah, so this little girl grows up who thinks that being beautiful is the only thing that is important," she said in an interview on Good Morning America around the time she was on American Idol. "Because as soon as I started putting on weight, what was the most important thing? To look perfect."

David and Katharine seem happy together.

In the end, what matters is how Katharine feels about it, and as far as we know, she's OK with her husband's comment — in fact, there's even a chance that he was just joking around.

At least, we hope he was just joking around!
