Waka Flocka Flame has inadvertently sparked an intense debate on social media. When asked who he would save if his wife and his child both fell into the ocean, the rapper, 38, answered without hesitating: He would save his wife. While some people understood where he was coming from, many others were not impressed by his answer.
Waka Flocka explained why he would prioritize saving his wife.
The controversial conversation occurred during an episode of the It’s Giving Podcast with Sarah Fontenot. During the episode, Sarah asked the rapper a hypothetical question: “You’re on the boat in the middle of the ocean with your wife and your child, and it’s still a young child. Both of them get lodged into the water …”
Before Sarah even finished what she was saying, Waka Flocka said, “My wife.”
“You’re gonna save your wife?” Sarah asked. “Why?”
The rapper initially had a simple explanation: “That’s my wife.” However, Sarah prompted him to explain in more detail. “I loved my wife before I loved my child,” Waka Flocka elaborated. “How the f— could I choose my child over something or someone that created you? Respectfully, I gotta make another one. I cannot make the same woman I love. It’s impossible.”
Some people — including Sarah — agreed with him.
On the podcast, Sarah said she actually agreed with him, but added that she’s garnered a lot of backlash for expressing that opinion. She said she “got thousands of comments” from people who’ve told her that she only feels that way because she’s “never been a mother.”
“For me, it feels like a lot of these people are coming from trauma,” she said. On social media, several people agreed with Waka Flocka and Sarah’s perspective. One person on X said that it might sound “harsh” but “he’s right. He should save her first and the child next.”
Another person who agreed with Waka Flocka’s take wrote, “Is this wrong? I know my husband would pick me any day.”
“I would want my husband to save me then we can work together to save the child,” a third person wrote on X.
But others said their children will always come first.

One person called the rapper’s answer “sad” and “selfish.”
Another social media user wrote: “Any true parent would sacrifice themselves for their child. If roles are flipped, you better not save me over my child.”
“I’m sorry but my child comes first, always will,” a third person wrote.
A fourth said, “No parent wants to be saved over their child.”
However, some people admitted that it’s a difficult question to answer given that, ideally, they’d like to save both. “I’d die trying to save both because I can’t live without either one,” one person answered.
