One of the challenges of being a celebrity, especially a female celebrity, is the constant focus on their appearance. The flip side of that, though, is that the average actress, model, or singer probably has access to more beauty products, treatments, tools, and tips than us mere mortals can even imagine. Add in access to the best plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and makeup artists, and it's no wonder that we're all curious about what celebrities really do to keep looking so good.
It turns out that while a lot of celebrities claim that their photo shoot-ready good looks come from basics like drinking water, keeping their skin moisturized, and being religious about sunscreen, some of them also have some surprising beauty secrets and hacks in their arsenal. While celebs may not want to confess all their beauty secrets (especially the ones that involve trips to the plastic surgeon!), we rounded up 17 of the more unusual beauty tips shared by some of our favorite actors, reality stars, and models.
This may be the first article that includes a Duggar, multiple Kardashians, a colony of bees, several products from the produce section of the grocery store, and nipple cream. Curious yet? Read on!
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is clearly not a woman who is afraid to invest a lot of time and money on her beauty routine. She's also clearly not afraid to get a little creepy with it, given that she's famously tried the so-called "vampire facial," where blood is drawn from the patient and then injected or applied to the face to improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow claims that she has personally benefited from a practice called "apitherapy," which is a really fancy way of saying "getting stung by bees on purpose." Allegedly, it's helpful for reducing inflammation and scarring but is quite painful. Hard pass!
Suki Waterhouse
When model and actress Suki Waterhouse wants to add some texture and volume to her fine hair, she turns to a sweet solution: Coca-Cola! She shared that she uses it as a rinse for instant beachy hair. No word on if subbing in Diet Coke or another soda will work just as well.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé may be able to afford any beauty treatment under the sun, but according to her makeup artist, she turns to a back-to-school staple to tame her eyebrows. Yep, she uses a glue stick to help set her eyebrows before performances because it doesn't budge, no matter how hard she dances or works up a sweat.
Margot Robbie
In an interview with Elle magazine, the Wolf of Wall Street actress shared that she uses something called Bepanthen as a lip balm. The fact that this product is actually a nipple cream and diaper rash treatment really makes it a workhorse of a product.
Bella Hadid
Supermodel Bella Hadid allegedly has an unusual hack for making sure her makeup is set flawlessly: dunking her face in a bowl of ice water. According to an interview with Huda Beauty, she applies all of her makeup except eyes and lips and then holds her face in a bowl of ice water for 15 to 30 seconds to make it all set. Brrr!
Olivia Munn
Actress Olivia Munn swears that her glowing and surprisingly wrinkle-free skin comes not from beauty treatments, Botox, or fillers, but from a diet filled with potatoes. Specifically, Japanese root potatoes and sweet potatoes, which are higher in hyaluronic acid. She told The Cut that she eats them multiple times a day, including for dessert. Some folks might prefer a life with some wrinkles, or a little Botox, if it means that potatoes aren't a dessert.
Jennifer Aniston
Everyone's favorite Friend is now well into her 50s (how did that happen?!) but looks at least a decade younger. Not only does she swear by drinking lots of water, she has also shared that she splashes her face with ice water 25 times every morning to start her day looking more refreshed.
Kourtney Kardashian
It’s not surprising to learn that Kourtney Kardashian, the most aspiring to be a crunchy mama of the Kardashian sisters, makes some of her own skin care treatments herself. She swears by adding honey to face masks and makes her own lip scrub out of sugar, honey, and coconut oil. Sounds pretty sweet (and a little sticky)!
Jessa Duggar
While there are plenty of celebs who are dropping big bucks on beauty, the various members of 19 Kids and Counting's Duggar family are definitely sticking to the more frugal side of the spectrum. Sister Jessa Seewald swears by a cheap curling iron from Walmart and homemade conditioning spray to detangle and style the long hair that most Duggars are famous for.
Cardi B
Cardi B's makeup artist, Erika La Pearl, revealed in Glamour magazine that the secret to getting Cardi's bold makeup looks starts with shaving her whole face with a dermaplaning tool to make it as smooth and peach fuzz-free as possible so the makeup really sinks into her skin. Another Cardi hack? Turning to her fans for tips! She's posted questions about skin care and requests for product suggestions on Instagram, which is a cool way of keeping it real about the fact that even celebs have skin issues.
Victoria Beckham
The Spice Girl and fashion designer is rumored to be a big fan of something called Japanese geisha facials. These pricey facials include a special ingredient that we don't recommend trying at home: bird poop. More specifically, a paste made from nightingale droppings, which is said to treat hyperpigmentation and to brighten skin tone.
Cameron Diaz
Nobody enjoys the annoying redness that comes with a pimple, including Cameron Diaz. Cameron's makeup artist, Gucci Westman, has stated that the actress uses Neosporin and Visine to reduce the redness, swelling, and irritation that comes with the occasional pimple. That seems so refreshingly normal compared with bird poop and bee stings!
Chrissy Teigen
OK, we have to admit that we love a beauty hack that is also pandemic friendly. So a big shout-out to Chrissy Teigen for sharing the genius tip of wearing a deep cleaning pore strip under a face mask to keep blackheads and "maskne" at bay.
Shailene Woodley
We've all heard the tips about keeping hair healthy by skipping the daily shampoo routine, and Shailene Woodley has taken that advice and run with it. She's said that she only uses shampoo once a month and that she thinks oily hair is the way to go.
Kendall Jenner
Another sister in the Kardashian orbit also swears by a homemade face mask and, like her older sister Kourtney, Kendall Jenner's also includes honey. Her mask mix is avocado, honey, oatmeal, and a little lavender oil. Honestly, it kind of sounds like a recipe for a mask or a pretty delicious breakfast.
Shay Mitchell
Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell has an unusual hack that involves a trip to the produce section of the grocery store instead of the beauty aisle. She suggests using a raw beet as a lip stain. She claims the natural looking color lasts all day!
