Now that it’s been over a year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison, into the world, we’re wondering when (and if) they’ll decide to go for baby No. 2. After all, from everything we’ve seen, they seem to be amazing parents to Archie, so we wouldn’t be surprised at all to find out that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex planned to continue to grow their family and give Archie a little brother or sister — and it seems like there’s no time better than the present for them to make it happen.
Let’s face it, the conditions under which they welcomed Archie weren’t exactly ideal, especially for two people who seemed to have resented the royal life so much. It couldn’t have been easy for Meghan to be pregnant and give birth to her first child under so much public scrutiny — especially since so much of it was brutally negative — nor could it have been easy for Harry to stand by and see it all happen to his family. Now that they’ve walked away from their lives as senior royals, and moved to the US, things are so different … and this pregnancy would be so much different from their last.
Here are all the reasons that now is the perfect time for Meghan and Harry to have a second baby. Of course, in the end, this is such a personal decision that’s obviously up to them, but now that they’re settled into their new home in Santa Barbara, California — and have more privacy than they’ve ever had since they got married in 2018 — it seems like this might be the absolute best time for them to grow their family.
Away From British Tabloids
Given that British tabloids are located, well, in Britain, and Meghan and Harry are no longer living in the UK, they’re far away from a major source of public backlash that got them down while Meghan was pregnant and a new mother to Archie. If she was pregnant now, she’d have to deal with significantly less pressure and nastiness from the media than she did with her first pregnancy — a definite plus.
Close to Meghan's Mom — Literally
There have been reports that Meghan’s mom is now living with Meghan and Harry, so what better time to welcome another baby than when they have the extra help from grandma? Last time around, Meghan didn’t get to have her mom so close by — which had to be difficult — and it would be so special for them both to be able to experience an entire pregnancy (and newborn phase) together.
No More Royal Protocols
Now that Meghan and Harry aren’t working royals any more, they don’t have to follow any royal protocols, which immediately makes being pregnant, having a baby, and just existing as a human being in general a whole lot easier. They can be themselves and call the shots on how they want their own lives to go, which has to be like taking a breath of fresh air.
Raising Their Kids How They Want
Even though Meghan and Harry are obviously their children’s parents no matter what, being in the middle of the royal family as parents means having a lot of opinions all around them — and having to do things a certain way. Now that they live in the US, Meghan and Harry would be able to raise Archie and baby number two however they choose to, and that has to be a huge advantage.
Having Some Distance From Will & Kate
With how long Prince William and Kate Middleton have been parents, the comparisons between the way they care for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — and the way that Meghan and Harry choose to parent Archie — are inevitable. But if Meghan and Harry are doing their own thing on another continent, it makes it a lot more difficult to make those kinds of comparisons, because their situations are simply so different.
More Privacy Than Ever
Though Meghan and Harry have definitely had to battle for their privacy since moving to the US, they have a lot more of it than they did while living in the UK, especially since they aren’t required to live in the public eye by virtue of their jobs. Having that kind of privacy while pregnant and caring for a newborn would be much less stressful for Meghan than when she was constantly being watched and scrutinized with Archie.
Less Busy
When Meghan and Harry were working royals, their schedules seemed constantly jam packed — royal engagements, tours that required travel (sometimes international), galas, meet and greets. Now, they only have the kind of obligations that they choose to take on, which means they have a lot more free time to fit a baby into their schedule.
Archie Is a Bit Older
Now that Archie is officially a year old (and counting), it might be a good time for Meghan to start thinking about making him a big brother. After all, even if she got pregnant right now, he’d be almost two years old by the time the baby was born. They’d be close in age for sure, but he’d be a bit more independent — and maybe, by being just two years apart, he and his brother or sister would be the best of friends.
Staying Home More
Thanks to current world events, Meghan and Harry are spending more time than ever at home … and when it’s not the best idea to go on elaborate vacations — or go to concerts, or spend time in crowded areas — why not make the most of the downtime they’ve been given and expand their family? It could be a good way to pass this very weird time we’re all living in, after all.
Meghan Can Have a Chill Pregnancy
Of course, for many of us, there’s no such thing as a “chill pregnancy,” but for Meghan Markle, there’s definitely a more chill pregnancy than what she had to do last time around, which was gestate in the public eye. It’s hard to really grasp how stressful that must have been for her, but right now, she’d be able to do things her way (and take a lot more naps).
Why not jump at the opportunity?
Can Have a Low-Key Birth
Meghan already broke royal tradition when Archie was born. Instead of introducing him to the world outside of the Lindo Wing hours after his birth, she took a few days to enjoy her baby in privacy. With baby No. 2, she would be able to take as much time as she needs, with there never being any obligation for any kind of public introduction, which might be much more up her alley.
Don't Have to Make Public Appearances
Anyone who’s ever been pregnant knows that putting on makeup, getting dressed, and going out to face the world isn’t always the most fun in the world while carrying a child — and it’s not much better during that postpartum period, either. Fortunately, Meghan will be free of that kind of obligation while she’s pregnant with her second baby, which we know she will probably greatly appreciate.
It Will All Happen in the US
Being pregnant and giving birth in a different country had to be its own kind of challenge for Meghan. After all, she hadn’t lived there long by the time she was expecting. This time, she will be in the country she grew up in for this experience — which might be a bit more familiar and comforting for her — making for a more pleasant experience.
Hospitals Are Locked Down
Another positive to our current world event situation: Hospitals are more locked down than ever before. With many having policies against visitors, Meghan would likely be able to go to her prenatal visits and give birth with a much smaller risk of her pregnancy being exposed to the public. In fact, in a lot of areas, she’d probably have even more privacy than ever before.
A More Relaxed Pregnancy Wardrobe
Don’t misunderstand us here … we adored absolutely everything about Meghan’s maternity style when she was pregnant with Archie, but admittedly, thanks to all her royal obligations, a lot of it was super dressy — and probably not the most comfortable. For baby No. 2, Meghan can wear whatever she wants, and if that happens to be leggings, comfy maternity tops, and big sweatshirts, she can totally have at it.
She makes the rules!
