We have to start by saying that the entire concept of Lifetime's reality TV series Married at First Sight is totally insane. It's basically a televised social experiment that lets viewers observe what happens when specialists use scientific methods to pair up total strangers who then get married without ever meeting each other. That's right, the show is basically a blind date on steroids that the entire world gets to watch. Insane! So it shouldn't come as a surprise that some seriously wild things happen on Married at a First Sight.
It takes a certain type of person to participate in such a show. We'd say many of the stars of the series are serial oversharers, which means that viewers get to see and hear a whole lot about what goes on in their fledgling marriages. It's pretty fascinating in that train wreck sort of way — we just can't look away. Marriage can be quite a roller coaster under normal circumstances, so things inevitably get pretty intense on the show at times.

Making a Mockery
On the latest episode of the Australia edition of Married at First Sight, the brides and grooms were all sitting around drinking. One of the contestants said that everyone was making a "mockery" of the experiment, and apparently a lot of the others agreed. Things proceeded to get loud and heated and totally out of control.
Rebecca Gets Caught Cheating
Married at First Sight contestant Rebecca Zemek totally got busted! Not only that, but she lied about it, too. She was caught on video kissing another man, and all the other contestants watched. Then when they confronted her about it, she said it was her brother. Outrageous! They replayed the video, and she had to fess up.
Coco & Sam Explode
At the Married at First Sight Australia commitment ceremony in March 2021, Coco said she was being continually "disrespected and torn down," and Sam was stunned. It was so bad, he actually demonstrated exactly the behavior she'd been dealing with while trying to prove her claims untrue. Then, when Coco chose to leave the relationship, everyone was surprised to see that Sam had opted to stay.
Molly Calls Jon 'Disgusting'
During season six of Married at First Sight, Molly and Jon's relationship was tumultuous to say the least. They never really got along and had several fights during their time on the show. But one night, they went out to a bar, and Molly started chatting up a guy she met. Jon was upset about it. Molly then proceeded to call him "disgusting" and "immature," and said that he was a monster.
Mia's Arrest
During season seven, bride Mia Bally was arrested literally on the way to her honeymoon with groom Tristan Thompson (no, not that one). She was detained at the airport, and Tristan had no clue what was going on for nearly an entire day. Even the show's producers didn't know why she was arrested. Turns out, she's a stalker!
The Crazy Thing Is …
OK, so Jamie and Doug from season one — yes, season one — are still together, and not only that, but they have two kids after battling infertility for years. The crazy thing is, Jamie actually cried at their wedding on the show because she wasn't at all attracted to Doug. Yet somehow, a lasting love grew from that unfortunate first impression.
Back to Mia
Mia just absolutely could not keep it together during her season of MAFS. After the whole arrest debacle, Tristan, who chose not to give up on her, found out that she had an active profile on a dating app. "There's a cloud that's hovering around that's stopping me from falling in love with you," he told her on the show.
Dr. Viviana Is Destructive
During an episode of Married at First Sight: Unmatchables, Dr. Viviana Coles, who is the show's resident relationship counselor, had one of the participants completely obliterate an old car using a sledge hammer. It was shocking to say the least, and fans on social media weren't too impressed with the aggressive tactic.
Katie Is a Serial Cheater
Kate Conrad of MAFS season 10 cheated on her husband, Derek, not once but twice, including during their honeymoon. The craziest part was that she cheated with her ex-boyfriend. During the reunion special for their season, the other couples totally slammed her for her infidelity.
Mikey Makes an Exit
In 2020, MAFS Australia's Mikey made a dramatic exit when he got ticked off at his bride over a joke she made. She thought his reaction "demolished" everything they had built, and he ditched her at the couples' dinner, after which she and the other Michael got into a heated argument. It was chaos.
Brandon Snaps
Season 10's Brandon and Taylor got into a heated argument because Brandon was upset that Taylor went out with her friends. "We're done and you're not gonna get what you wanna get," he told the producers, before asking them if they were gonna "put hands" on him when they asked him not to remove his mic on his own. Brandon was totally heated, and it was awkward.
Things Go South for Cyrell & Martha
During season six of the Australia series, Cyrell was quite a pot stirrer, and things did not go well between her and fellow bride Martha. Everything came to a head one day when Martha and her man were zenned out enjoying some champagne and spa treatments, and Cyrell went on the attack. Things got so intense that the producers had to intervene.
AJ Gets Irate With Producers
AJ Vollmoeller of season eight got his lady, and they are still together today — but not before doing his homework. He wasn't too happy about it, though, and when the producers told him he had to complete the assignment they had given him, he was irate. The night ended with his wife in tears over the ordeal.
Blueberry Angst
This one is absolutely wild, but totally hilarious too. During season six of MAFS Australia, Martha absolutely did not want to share her blueberries with her partner Michael. She told him so and was dead serious, but even he had to chuckle about it. He was flabbergasted, and she wanted to bring it up with the show's expert panel.
Honeymoon Shutdown
During Bronson and Ines' honeymoon trip on season six of MAFS Australia, Ines was totally not into it — or Bronson. They were on a boat trip, and she started telling him off. She complained and then when he retaliated by calling her a "horrible person," she demanded someone get her off the boat.
Luke Gets Graphic
Oof! Things between Kate and Luke on season nine were just awful from the very beginning. But he didn't confess until much later that despite claiming not to be attracted to her, they had been having sex since their honeymoon. But Kate revealed that that very night he had told her he was "repulsed" by her and that he felt "dead inside," and even questioned his own sexuality.
That Lap Dance Tho'
Shawniece and Jephte of season six were a match made in MAFS heaven, and apparently she knew it from the very beginning. On their wedding night, she gave Jephte a lap dance right in front of his mother. It was wild and definitely something he nor fans of the show will soon forget.
'Basic Caucasian Sex'
Season 10's Beth Bice became an instant icon when her husband, Jamie, complained about not having enough sex, and she put him in his place by telling him, "You just do basic Caucasian sex." More than two years later, the couple is still married, though, so apparently things have gotten better. Is it possible it's even more embarrassing for him now that they are still a couple?
Zach Cheats
Zach Justice from season 10 was an absolute snake. He refused to get with the program, and eventually his wife Mindy figured out that he had been trying to hook up with one of her closest friends. Mindy confronted both Zach and the friend, and it was all so shady. Mindy ended up dumping Zach before the end of the experiment and she later found out that he had actually gone on a date with castmate Kate Conrad while they were still filming. Yuck!
