When Lady Gaga opened this year's Met Gala by tearing through three different red carpet dresses (one on top of another on top of another) until she was left in her undies and fishnets, we knew we were in for the craziest, boldest, and most eventful Gala of all time.
For those not in the know, this year's Met Gala theme was "camp," which is a fashion term alluding to everything exaggerated, ironic, kitschy, cheesy, and flamboyant. And while most of us were anticipating that few celebrities would grasp this concept (need we bring up that time the theme was "punk"?), most of this year's looks knocked the theme right out of NYC's Upper East Side.
Below, catch just a few of the endless looks that dropped jaws worldwide.
Billy Porter
Porter payed homage to camp the best way he knows how: by arriving on a gilded throne, carried by a horde of shirtless and gorgeous male models.
Laverne Cox
She delivered equal parts camp and side-eye in a dramatic black gown and space-age metallic makeup.
Lady Gaga
Gaga eliminated the fashion competition at the very top of the night by stripping through not just one but three gowns — until she was left in nothing but undies and fishnets.
Kylie and Kendall Jenner
The Jenners came through in full force with these matching, bright Versace gowns.
Celine Dion
Dion also topped the night off the completely right way in head-to-toe dazzling crystals and a headpiece that screamed, "I'm Celine Dion, biatch."
Janelle Monáe
We all knew Monáe would knock this theme out of the park, and she did not disappoint with her completely functional eyeball props.
Awkwafina
It's only fitting that one of the stars of Ocean's 8 showed up at the Met Gala dripping in gold — and this time she isn't going to help steal millions of dollars worth of jewels.
Mindy Kaling
Another Ocean's 8 star dazzled in head-to-toe gold — and, shockingly, a platinum blonde mop! Looks like Kaling took her April Fools' joke to the next level.
Yara Shahidi
Shahidi let her natural curls pattern shine with giant extensions and a look that French queens would find enviable.
Tiffany Haddish
Haddish took the gaudy concept of camp and pulled it all the way out in this perfectly fitted zebra-print suit.
Madelaine Petsch
Cheryl Blossom wouldn't be caught dead in a pastel color, but Petsch looked divine as a fairy princess.
Natasha Lyonne
Orange Is the New Black and Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne brought the camp of the '80s to life in this color-blocked jumpsuit.
Janet Mock
Iconic LGBTQ activist Janet Mock shut the pink carpet down with this feathers-meets-metal gown.
Kris Jenner
Jenner took kitsch to the next level with a look she says is similar to what she wore back in the '80s.
Katy Perry
Lumiere who? Perry was no match for a dark room with her chandelier getup.
Kacey Musgraves
Barbie can't even compare to Kacey Musgraves, who was barely recognizable in her huge blonde wig and pink pleather dress.
Dua Lipa
Looking like a 1970s psychedelic trip, "New Rules" singer Dua Lipa worked the pink carpet in major camp fashion.
Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart
Everyone's favorite Riverdale couple showed up looking like absolute snacks together — and let's just say they blew their looks from last year out of the water.
Charles Melton and Camila Mendes
And everyone's other favorite Riverdale couple followed close behind looking just as spectacular.
Hailee Steinfeld
Steinfeld lived out everyone's fantasy of being able to wear one of those viral Viktor & Rolf meme gowns in real life. Sigh.
Cardi B
Last but definitely not least, Cardi B — as expected — literally shut down the entire event to make room for her impossibly long, red velvet gown.
Lizzo
LIZZO. Just look at Lizzo. I rest my case.
