When choosing a house or apartment to move into, one of the greatest assets the space can have is closet space. Lots and lots of closet space. My personal dream is to have my own walk-in closet. A walk-in close with a space for everything — a wall of shoe shelves, a corner for all my bags, and enough hanging space that I can sort my dresses by color. While we're at it we may as well add drawer space for the unmentionables and a vanity for me to sit and do my makeup. Daydreaming is fun. In real life, however, the likelihood of finding an affordable place large enough for a family that's abundant with closet space is slim to none. At least when you live in a big city like I do.
My mom is a real estate agent, and over the years I've seen many homes and apartments. More often than not, one is left at a crossroads when deciding where they want to live. Do I choose the home with lots of bedroom space or living space, but minimal closet space? Or do I choose the home with less room space, but more closets. Most would choose the former. But that doesn't mean new home owners have to suffer for make that choice.
For those who do end up choosing the bedroom space over the closet space, retailers like Home Depot are providing tons of creative options for clothing storage. The array of options fit rooms of all sizes and decors of all styles. From gigantic closet organizer models to medium sized hanging organizers with drawers, there's so much to choose from and even more innovative ways to use them to make the most of closet space. Whether it is stacking creatively or bringing the closet out into the living spaces, there is a way to make the most of space.

Martha Stewart Living Classic White Ultimate Closet Kit
This white closet organizing set is another great option for organizing clothing. The color is perfect for the mom who cleans every day and keeps her room off limits to her kids (that mom is not me), or the one who has older kids. For the mom whose afraid to have anything white around her kids, this piece comes in darker colors. Its truly is the ultimate closet accessory, with its four drawers, four large spaces for hanging clothing, and three open sections for decor or more clothing.

Modifi Horizon Melamine Walk-in Closet Kit
Call me old, or out-of-touch, but I did not know that one could order a complete walk-in closet kit at Home Depot! There are so many elements that I love about this, but the main one is just the fact that an extra bedroom could easily become a closet big enough for my whole family– with two grand and a couple contractors. The beautiful dark finish on the wood is just the icing on the cake.

Hampton Bay Select MDF 3-Door Wall Cabinet in White
A three door wall cabinet like this one is a unique way to add storage in a bedroom. One could install this above a desk or vanity, or just on an empty wall for some extra space that won't clutter the room.

Heavy Duty Commercial Steel Shelf Clothing Garment Rolling Collapsible Rack
Who doesn't love a garment rack? At first glance, one might feel that a garment rack would be out of place in a perfectly decorated room. But ones with a little extra flare can make it look like it belongs with decor.

Prepac White Space-Saving Shoe Storage Cabinet
Shoes are the items one rarely finds in the same place from home to home. In some places they're at the front door; in others, they line the floor of a closet. In addition to trying to find a place to keep all our shoes, it's so hard to keep them neat! Thank goodness for the inventors of shoe storage cabinets like this, providing out of the way storing while also giving easy access to one's entire shoe collection.
Prepac White Space-Saving Shoe Storage Cabinet ($208, Home Depot)
Home Decorators Collection 24-Pair Shoe Storage Cabinet
This shoe storage cabinet could easily be mistaken for a credenza or used as a table to hold flowers near a bedroom window. There's plenty of space for shoes, but the doors add a touch that keeps our shoes the dirty little secrets they sometimes need to be.
Home Decorators Collection 24-Pair Shoe Storage Cabinet ($450, Home Depot)
Baxton Studio Margaret Modern and Contemporary White Wood 2-Door Shoe Cabinet with Faux Leather Seating Bench
I wish I had a bench like this in my room to sit on! While I'm doing my makeup, lacing up my shoes, applying lotion — this would come so handy. But what makes this even more useful is that behind the two doors is space for a bunch of shoes to be stored. Furniture with multiple uses is what all moms need.

Martha Stewart Living 13-Hook Sliding Belt/Tie Rack
Tie racks like this one are great space savers. Instead of stuffing belts, ties, jewelry, scarves, and even bags in drawers (that could be used for other items), these hooks could hold all those things and add a decorative touch to our closet or bedroom.
Martha Stewart Living 13-Hook Sliding Belt/Tie Rack ($28, Home Depot)
Honey-Can-Do Chrome and Black Five-Tier Swinging Arm Pant Rack (Home Depot, $16)
This hanger is so cool, isn't it? About four pairs of pants can be hung through the little slots, and a jacket or shirt can be hung over its shoulders. Talk about a space saver.

Simplify 9-Compartment Faux Jute Drawer Organizer
When running short on closet and storage space, every little space has to be optimized. Drawer space can be doubled and tripled with organizers like this one. More importantly, we get an eagles eye's view of everything in our sock or underwear collection, instead of digging around for what we're looking for.

The Macbeth Collection Grommet Medium Geo Natural Storage Tote
This little tub is so cute. I imagine one could use a bunch of these to store items on the top shelf of a closet, above the bar where clothes are hung. Or, the floor of the closet, underneath the hanging garments could be lined with these, and filled with various small clothing items or household items like ironing/steaming tools (as pictured), hair products, makeup, or whatever else comes to mind.
The Macbeth Collection Grommet Medium Geo Natural Storage Tote ($14, Home Depot)
The Macbeth Collection Geo Natural 6 Shelf Closet Organizer
A more affordable alternative to the closet kits we saw earlier, this fabric closet organizer holds a generous amount of folded clothing items. I actually own an alternative to this I purchased from Target, and its a great alternative to having a dresser that takes up space outside of the closet. All my folded clothes go in these.

ClosetMaid 2-Door Wardrobe Cabinet
Wardrobes are great replacements for nonexistent closets and supplements to existing storage space. Keeping things neat can help a mom to keep sane, and an item like this is a great way to do that.

Home Decorators Collection Manhattan Modular 3-Shelf Storage Corner Unit
This corner unit looks great as part of a larger closet kit, but I can also imagine it as a great stand alone piece The corners of rooms are often overlooked; but a piece like this can bring not only utility, but beauty to those spaces, instead of cobwebs.
Home Decorators Collection Manhattan Modular 3-Shelf Storage Corner Unit ($249, Home Depot)
Triton Products Storability Utility/Garment Wall Storage Center (Home Depot, $211)
This unit, with its shelves, drawers, hanging bars and garment bags is a one- stop for clothing storage and laundry needs. Soiled clothing can be sorted below the storage bags on the left, on a daily basis, instead of pouring them out of a single hamper and sorting them on the floor later.
Triton Products Storability Utility/Garment Wall Storage Center ($211, Home Depot)
ClosetMaid ShelfTrack 4-Drawer Kit in White (Home Depot, $74)
Steel Wire storage units like this one are just as strong as their wood and fabric counterparts, but provide a different, more modern aesthetic (in my mind, at least). They're also easier to hang from doors, or just installing on the wall as a part of larger closet kit. Another great aspect of this kit, is that its transparent, so all the items in each drawer are easy to see, and easy to grab.
ClosetMaid ShelfTrack 4-Drawer Kit in White ($74, Home Depot)
Home Decorators Collection Hampton Harbor 4-Door Tall Cabinet
This is another one of my favorite pieces for clothing storage. It resembles a china cabinet, with its glass doors above the drawer, and the concealed doors below. Pieces like though, keep the disheveled appearance that stored clothing can sometimes have, concealed. The grey color is a great touch as well.
