26 Fabulous Coats for Plus-Size Moms to Rock This Winter

Yep, its official — summer's gone. We're a couple months into autumn, and where I live, we're NOT having an Indian summer. One day, I opened my door and a stiff, chilling breeze slapped me in the face. My 2-year-old daughter, who was with me, stood there and felt the breeze, whined, and then turned back around and walked into the house. That's her way of saying "Not today, Satan," to winter's welcoming winds. I followed her inside and was able to dig up her winter coats pretty quickly, but as for me, I couldn't find anything. I have my leather jacket, and I have my super huge and puffy bomber for going outdoors during or after a blizzard. But nothing just for everyday wear, to and from work.

Time to go shopping!

Shopping for a new season is so fun. But as a plus-sized mom, I find it a little challenging. Especially because there is a lot I am looking for in a winter coat. There are so many cute, in-style coats on the market, but that's not enough. There are so many other aspects to consider besides cuteness, especially for winter and especially for a plus-sized woman. Will the coat be warm? Is there a nice lining? Does it come in big enough sizes that I can actually layer things under it? How does it look with layers under it? The list goes on and on.

Although I can't answer all those questions for everyone, and I can't bring these coats into homes for everyone to try on, I took it upon myself to scout hundreds of web pages for a good assortment of styles in plus-sized winter outerwear. From thick pea coats to flattering flannel, there's one in here for every mom, every style, every occasion.

We start our online shopping trip with what I consider the most practical of the coats. This three-in-one style coat has both an inner lining and an outer shell that can be worn together and on their own. Parts of this coat could carry us through three out of four seasons of the year.

Plaid is one of my favorite winter trends that never goes away. i feel like every year the number of items that come in plaid and different color combinations in the plaid just grow. This large long-line plaid coat is a must have.

Maxi Puffer Jacket

Everyone needs a maxi-length puffer jacket. During the coldest days of winter, when the car is under a bunch of snow, a coat needs to be long enough to protect the majority of the body from biting, below freezing weather. At a certain point, the short jackets just don't cut it.

Teddy Faux Fur Biker Jacket

Teddy coats are always fun because they're made out of this soft, comfortable material that resembles fleece.  But this one is cut like a biker jacket, giving cool flair to a jacket that usually just resembles a Snuggie.

For that ever-so-fabulous winter look, insert the beautiful faux fur coat that can be worn with anything. This is one of my favorite shades of faux fur, its so luxurious, and yet so neutral!

See what I mean, when I say there are so many takes on the plaid coat? This one is a modern spin on the classic print, with plaid and houndstooth mixed in one coat. The black and white color scheme brings it all together.

Once Upon a Thyme Hooded Coat

img-of-media-slide-260688.jpg
Modcloth

Not many pea coats or wool coats come with a hood, but this one does and its of ample size. But the real selling point, for me at least, is the bright green color and the A-line cut that would give everyone the illusion of an hourglass shape.

Once Upon A Thyme Hooded Coat ($150, ModCloth)

Polka Dot Belted Coat

Printed coats just make me so happy; dare I say, they make everyone happy? This great primary colored coat with huge polka dots will brighten even the darkest, windiest, and coldest of days.

Mustard Colored Double-Breasted Coat

Yet another bright coat for the darkest season of the year is this mustard yellow coat. A color that works great in fall will also bring sunshine to the cloudiness of winter.

Puffer Jacket With Peplum

when the weather calls for a padded jacket, it's a struggle to make one look cute. This jacket adds a little ruffle around the hem to give the coat an adorable and dainty element.

Asymmetric Faux Fur Collar Padded Jacket

Another option in the padded coat family is this moto-style version. Not only does it come with an asymmetrical zipper, it also comes in two unexpected colors — a blush pink and a burgundy/black combination.

Olive/Burgundy Utility Jacket

Fashion Nova

I was surprised to see how many coats I saw with this color combination. Olive is a pretty much a staple in the coat and jacket world, but the bright, wine-colored fur paired with the olive is a fresh take.

Metallic Ultimate Puffer Jacket

img-of-media-slide-260716.jpg
Roaman's

For the woman who needs more than just a little ruffle or bright color to wear a puffer coat, we have this space-age metallic puffer jacket. My favorite of all the colors is this silver version, but it also comes in rose gold and shiny black.

Metallic Ultimate Puffer Jacket ($170, Roaman's)

Asymmetrical Zip Wool Blend Coat

img-of-media-slide-260717.jpg
Roaman's

The neck and huge zipper are my favorite features of this wool blend coat. It covers the entire neck, like a turtleneck, which makes up for its lack of a hood. This is for someone who has her hats and scarves all picked out, and isn't relying on the coat for most of her warmth, but does require it to be extra stylish.

Asymmetrical Zip Wool Blend Coat ($130, Roaman's)

Printed Puffer Jacket

This navy blue puffer coat is a standout with its miniature silver stars over a navy blue background. Even though its such a tiny, dainty pattern, something about this coat I still take seriously.

Midi Packable Puffer Jacket With Thermoplume Technology – Night Sky ($190, Lane Bryant)

Ombre Wool Asymmetic Zip Coat

img-of-media-slide-260725.jpg
Ulla Popken

The ombre trend isn't as hot as it was a couple years ago, but it's definitely not totally out of style. This black into gray ombre pattern on this clean-cut wool piece is the perfect touch to keep it from being boring.

Faux Fur Leopard Coat

img-of-media-slide-260726.jpg
Ulla Popken

Gray leopard print is the classy older sister of the typical faux fur leopard coat. Instead of screaming "rock 'n roll" or "wild child," it sort of whispers "I'm fun, but I have a serious side."

Faux Fur Leopard Coat ($100, Ulla Popken)

Tall Gray Pebble Padded Coat

img-of-media-slide-260750.jpg
Dorothy Perkins

In winter one can never go wrong with wearing silver or a light gray. Since style rules claim we shouldn't wear white after Labor Day (not that we abide by them), the next best thing is a coat that is just a shade darker but still gives that frosty vibe.

An oversized coat is absolutely necessary in winter. For all the layers one needs to wear to be warm, an egg-shaped coat like this is the perfect topper.

For every style, I'm sure there's a mom who loves it. This fun style of coat is not for the faint of heart, but it is definitely one I'd buy. Leopard is a classic print, and super fun to wear in fall and into the winter. Grab one of these for a chilly day that doesn't require too much padding.
