15 Times Black Cats Were Too Busy Being Cute to Be a Superstition

We've all heard some nasty rumors about black cats — that they're bad luck crossing our paths, or that they're signs of death and doom. But the truth is, the stories, folklore, myths, and superstitions around black cats are different in every culture, and in some parts of the world, black cats are considered lucky! In Scotland, for instance, black cats are a symbol of prosperity (especially when one shows up at the home unannounced). They're also considered quite lucky throughout Japan. However, in large parts of Europe, a black cat is frequently thought of as a witch's companion, and a black cat crossing one's path means that person is going to have bad luck (although in Germany, if the cat crosses from left to right instead of right to left, it's actually seen as a good sign). Black cats even have a harder time being adopted from shelters for this reason!

Of course, we think that black cats are totally sweet, adoptable, and are much cuter than they're usually given credit for, but then again, we're generally pretty serious about love of cats in general, no matter what color they are. For anyone else who's as into cats as much as we are, take a look through some tattoos for die-hard cat people — they're so perfect, we can totally see ourselves getting a variation on one of these someday soon. And of course, we recommend reading about this totally awesome kid: Girl Makes 'Wall of Sorrow' to Guilt Dad into Getting a Cat Because Kids Are Master Manipulators. This wall is so hilarious and perfect, her dad really should cave ASAP (and we don't just think that because we adore cats, too). And for anyone who thinks they can't have a cat even though they'd love one due to sensitivities, take a look at these hypoallergenic cats — they may work for those who have allergies.

This Sweet Boy With His Little Pink Tongue

Please meet Ledges, a black cat who is way cuter than he is spooky. Look at that cute little tongue sticking out! As one commenter says, "Did any birds fly down and land on your tongue? " We hope so for Ledges, and hope not for the birds!

This Very Annoyed-Looking Cow-Cat

For whatever reason, cats looking extremely annoyed at being dressed up in costumes just tickles the heck out of us. Look at this little black kitty's beautiful green eyes, all distorted from sheer annoyance! We don't know what's wrong with us, but we think it's hilarious.

This Amazing Swimcat

Who even knew that some cats are so brave they're not even scared of the water — what we normally think of as a cat's worst nightmare? This cutie pie isn't just adorable, he's also kind of inspiring us to tackle our fears!

This Sweet Butterfly Lover

Has this photo been digitally altered? Maybe, but we don't even care. The cat is clearly one of the cuter creatures to ever exist, and the little blue butterfly perched on their nose is absolutely slaying us given the kitty's expression, too.

This Collared Kitty

To be honest, we're not positive whether this cat should fall under the category "cute," or "extremely elegant," but we loved this photo so much, it had to go in either way. Look at that collar! How is he even standing it!

A Totally Perfect Halloween Cat

Yes, that's an actual black cat who looks to be in the middle of carefully inspecting a line-up of pumpkins. The cat reminds us of a general inspecting his troops — which really adds to the cuteness factor here for us.

This Expectant Kitty

We don't know if this handsome little beast is waiting for a treat or just looks up at their human like this all day long, but either way, we're jealous.

Please meet Ethel the Pirate Cat, as her human calls her. Ethel was born with a problem in one eye, and now only has the one. She was rescued on Valentine's Day 2019, and as her Instagram profile says, "Life is getting better "

This Painfully Cute Nurse Kitty

Not to denigrate any of the incredibly cute cats above, but we kind of had to save the best for last, didn't we? The comments say it all: "Overload cuteness ❤️" "That is the flippin’ cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!!" and "OMG!! This maybe be the cutest kitty photo you have ever posted! I'm in love." We couldn't agree more.
