19 Best Disney-Inspired Family Costumes

Halloween is around the corner! At this time of year, the only thing better than dressing up and having kids to dress up is dressing up as a family and indulging in the holiday fun together. Disney inspires tried-and-true costumes. They're well-known, well-loved, and most people know exactly who the characters are from the movies, whether it's an early film like Snow White or a later one like Moana or Frozen.

There are always good costume ideas floating around, but in 2021 these are some of the family Disney ideas that we found based on years past. The best part is that no matter what a family looks like, or what size they are (big with a whole bunch of kids or small with one parent and a newborn baby, or two parents and a dog) there are enough character dress-up options to go around. Take a look at the ideas below and we look forward to seeing the magic come alive this year.

'The Incredibles'

The Incredibles is one of the greatest animated Disney movies that fans should know, but if not, it's about a family in which all members have super powers. There's the mom (Mrs. Incredible), dad (Mr. Incredible), Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. Plus a whole lot of other characters for extra family members (human or furry.)

'Star Wars'

Star Wars will always inspire great costume ideas. Between it being an iconic Disney property and movie series, there are tons of great characters to dress up as, and ones that are beloved across generations. Seriously, who doesn't love Yoda? With the new Star Wars section at the Disney parks and the newer series, The Mandalorian, the costumes will be popular this year, once again.

'Toy Story' Family Costumes

Toy Story was so good, Disney made a whole series of the movies with beloved characters that millennial parents have grown up with. It makes a great theme for a family costume as any characters together, whether Woody, Buzz, and Jesse, or any of the others, will always make sense. Plus, it's possible to buy the costumes or DIY them at home.

'Lilo & Stitch'

Lilo & Stitch came out 2002, but with the movie being so beloved, and all of the spinoffs (all of which are on Disney+) the characters are iconic, and they make great ones to dress up as. The best part is that they can be worn by families big and small, and it doesn't matter if Lilo or Stitch are mom and dad, the kids, or even the dogs.

Pooh Bear & Friends

Winnie the Pooh and his friends make for fun family costumes as there are lots of animals and friends from the 100 Acre Wood. But if a family is just mom and baby, this Pooh Bear and belly full of honey makes for a perfect, and complete, Halloween costume. Larger families can pick any characters they want: Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, or Owl.

Disney Villains

Disney family costumes don't always have to come from the same movie. In fact, they can just be "themes" of characters from the movies, like Disney villains. Every movie has one, and they're so much fun to dress up as. Just like the Disney princesses are their own genre, so are the villains.

Mickey, Minnie, & Goofy

After Walt Disney, the founder of Disney, Mickey Mouse is the lead character of this magical place and movie house. And that's because he, along with Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and others, are the original cartoons from Disney's empire. Throw it way back with every person in the family dressing up as one of the OGs.

'Haunted Mansion'

Haunted Mansion is an awesome Disney movie, so much so that it was turned into its own ride in Disney World. It's also a great source of inspo for a Disney Halloween costume, and it's uncommon too, as not many people remember it compared to some of the other Disney films. It's a shame the movie isn't more popular at Halloween, because it's one of the spookier Disney movies!

'Monsters, Inc.'

Monsters, Inc. has to be one of the greatest (and furry) and not-so-scary Disney movies. What better time to dress up as a monster than on Halloween? It's a great mix between honoring the spooky vibe of the holiday and being a true fan of Disney. Families can dress up as any of the many awesome monsters from the original or prequal film.

'Up'

Is it possible to watch Up without crying? We don't think so. The characters are also so captivating that they make great inspiration for family costumes. Someone can be Carl, another person can be Carl's wife, Ellie, then there's the dog, Dug, and the boy, Russell. Plus the pack of dogs and even balloons!

'Hocus Pocus'

Hocus Pocus is one of the most beloved Halloweeny kids (and grown-up) movies for the spooky season. It's safe to say it's iconic, which makes it a great family costume idea. There's three witches who are also sisters (Sarah, Winifred, and Mary Sanderson) so it's technically already a family affair for three witchy family members.

'Alice in Wonderland'

Speaking of classics, Alice in Wonderland, which could be the book or the Disney movie, will always have its place on that list. Plus, the characters are so fun to dress up as. Between Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and more. There are tons of costume fodder there for families of all shapes and sizes. Tea time anyone?

'Frozen'

Though it's been a few years since the first movie, Frozen is one of the newer Disney movies to capture the hearts of fans everyone and earn its place in the cannon. There's no limit to who in the family can dress up as what character, between Elsa and Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Hans, there's no shortage of options.

'Tarzan'

Tarzan has to be one of the great Disney films when it comes to the music. But it also is another classic aside from the incredible score. Between the humans and the animals, there are lots of fun characters to choose from, like Tarzan and Jane or some of the animals, from Terk to Kala to Kerchak.

'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

For some of the spookier Disney families out there, we suggest The Nightmare Before Christmas as another theme to create family Halloween costumes around. There's the eclectic Jack and Sally, of course, but also other characters in the famous Halloween who Jack becomes the king of. It's also great for the people who love Christmas just as much.

'The Little Mermaid'

Whaddayacallit? Oh, yes! A costume! From The Little Mermaid, of course. A true Disney classic that is great for the romantic fans out there. Someone can be Ariel, another can be Prince Eric or one of the other sidekicks and fun characters, like Flounder or the villainess Ursula. It's great for families who love to be fun but also a little dark.

'Finding Nemo'

What's not to love about Finding Nemo? It's so quotable and never will go out of style, which is why we think it makes such a fabulous inspiration for a family Halloween costume. There's Nemo, Nemo's dad, Dory, and literally any kind of fish. And it's even easy to include the family dog in the fun.

'Peter Pan'

Peter Pan is one of the underrated but special Disney movies. There are so many characters for family members to choose from, which is what it makes it a smart choice for a group Halloween costume. There's Peter Pan, of course, but there's also Wendy, her siblings, Tiger Lily, Captain Hook, and the alligator. We recommend leaving the traditional Tiger Lily outfit out unless the family is Native American and can wear the garments while understanding that they are sacred.

Disney Snacks

We saved one of the coolest family and group Disney costumes we could find for last and that is the Disney theme park snacks. Yes, this still counts as a group Disney Halloween costume. There's the iconic Mickey pretzels, the huge mounds of cotton candy, as well as the classic popcorn and ice cream sundaes.
