Our 9 Favorite Hairstyles At The 2019 VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards are always a show. There have been many legendary performances at the VMAs, and some infamous controversies. Want to feel old? Madonna and Britney Spears famously kissed on the VMA stage in 2003. The event also brings out daring VMA beauty looks from musicians and celebs, and 2019 was no exception. Stars like FKA Twigs, Lizzo, Taylor Swift, Normani, and even Snooki brought it with their hairstyles. Check out our faves below.

Lizzo wore the only beehive.

I’m not bad, I was just drawn this way.. ????????

The higher the beehive, the closer to God, and Lizzo knows this for a fact. Her glam Marilyn Monroe-esque dress was complemented by a giant bouffant, courtesy of Dare to Have Hair wigs and celebrity stylist Shelby Swain, who called the look "PEG BUNDY X BRIGITTE BARDOT!" on Instagram. This hairdo is for the record books.

Pride Month may be over, but Halsey wore a rainbow flag in her hair.

Halsey, who loves hair transformations, wore a rainbow flag pattern in her center part, along with long, straight jet-black hair. Stylist Florido decked out Halsey's hair using products by Dove and Good Hair Day.

Speaking of long, straight hair, feast your eyes on Normani.

Normani truly brought down the house in a sequined bikini top and thigh slit skirt, but it was her perfect straight locks that nailed down her look. Casual layers framed her face, while the cool brown tone is shinier than my lip gloss. Stylist JStayReady is responsible for this masterpiece.

Put this FKA Twigs look in the MoMA.

FKA Twigs can never do wrong because she's unafraid to be her best, weirdest self on the red carpet. It's always a treat seeing what look she'll come up with next. For the 2019 VMAs, FKA Twigs wore fire-engine red ringlets with a tiny bit of dark roots poking through, hooked up by hairstylist Jillian Halouska. Halouska called the look "Pre-Raphaelite punk," and this is now officially the aesthetic for the rest of the year.

Taylor Swift's hair is casually not-casual.

Taylor Swift's beauty looks have changed over the years, but one thing has remained constant — her love of red lipstick and blond hair. At this year's VMAs, Swift upped the ante on her usual bangs and wavy lob, with beautiful straw-colored highlights.

You can't spell Hailee Steinfeld without HEAT.

Hailee Steinfeld brought the only heat to the VMAs red carpet. Her long, flowing waves bounced effortlessly against her red gown, coiffed by stylist Laura Polko using Pai-Shau products and T3 styling tools. Wanna steal this look? Polko revealed that she sectioned off Steinfeld's hair, used the T3 Voluminous Curls iron to get those enviable wide waves, and set the top portion with the T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers, before lightly brushing it out and applying a hairspray. OK, I can totally try this at home, sans the pricey tools!

It is raining or is it just Adriana Lima's hair?

Adriana Lima wrote on Instagram that this was her very first VMAs appearance, and she brought out all the stops. Her wet-look hairstyle is giving me serious Bachelor in Paradise vibes, and I mean that in a good way because I am obsessed with that show. Stylist Andrew Fitzsimmons made Lima's hair look glam and not at all like she got caught in a New Jersey summer thunderstorm.

And speaking of New Jersey...

The VMAs were held in Newark, New Jersey, this year, and who better to make an appearance than Jersey Shore star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi? She's as New Jersey as Bruce Springsteen, and seriously rocks that ponytail on top of her head. Those red highlights? IT'S MONEY, BABY.

But the award for best hairstyle of the 2019 VMAs goes to...

…J BALVIN. If you didn't know about this Colombian reggaeton rapper, you do now. He performed at the VMAs alongside Bad Bunny, and fully stepped on our necks with this green and black tiger stripe situation. While he's known for his crazy hair colors, and is super popular in the Latinx community (seriously, his music is played at all of my family gatherings), the VMAs were Balvin's biggest moment in front of American audiences — most of whom will remember him because of that amazing hair color. ¡Qué guapo!
