I tried the best wigs on Amazon and the winner is clear

If you are still under the impression that wigs are only incredible for grandmothers, then Amazon is about to prove you oh so wrong!

The wig game has officially been STEPPED up, and thanks to the community of beauty lovers on Youtube and Twitter, I've finally been put on to the greatest hair hack in history.

I'm about to spill the tea on how to snag a decent wig while only spending $40 or less.

Yes, $40 or less. Let's go!

Since I'm always a fan of something long, silky, and a little luxurious — I made sure to snag a wig Naomi Campbell would be proud of. Say hi to the Mona wig by Outre ($29.56, Amazon) fresh out of the package.

I know what you're thinking but relax and hold the verdict, my friends!

When I first pulled this wig out, I was side-eyeing it a tad, but then I remembered a wig tip I picked up from beauty influencer Vicky Logan: All wigs (save the ga-zillion dollar celebrity ones) need customization!

"Always spruce it up. Cut it. Layer it. Do whatever you want to do to it to make it your own. Lace wigs come basic," she said during a wig styling tutorial.

I put Logan's advice to work, and the first thing I did was cut the lace at this wig's hairline.

Now it's time for the real magic to begin!

Next, I pulled my tweezers out and plucked hairs from the wig's part.

A super skinny part doesn't look realistic and while the goal isn't to "trick" other people (FTW!) — the goal *is* to make your wig look as natural and flattering to YOU as possible.

Warning: Do NOT over-pluck your wig. Once it's plucked and the gap is a highway strip, there's no magic to put the strands back.

This is ALL of the hair I plucked out.

Yay!

Once you've plucked the wig to your taste, then it's time to do something about the part's lace color. The science? Use your foundation or concealer so your part offers the illusion of skin.

The lace of a wig is often white but even when it's clear, can still be super obvious. Adding your foundation match will give your forehead and wig part a seamless color flow.

And don't worry, your foundation will not look liquid-y as it does in this photo. You blend it in just as you would if it were on your face.

After spraying the wig down with hairspray to kill static fly-aways and give it a smoother, fleekier look — this is my final result.

I'm so feeling it!

One critique of this Mona wig: the hair density is a little low, meaning it's a touch thinner than I would like. The more hair on the wig, the more of a natural movement the hair seems to have.

If you would like it to be thicker, most wig companies offer a density selection, which is measured by percent. 150% or a little higher is usually the density percentage to aim for. If the brand does not have an option, then move on to wigs that do specify the hair density so you know how thick it will be.

Still, this hair's density isn't bad for $30.

The next wig I tried was the riskiest of them all — the blue Yara wig ($35, Amazon).

I've never done such a bold color before and I'm SO INTO this black and aqua ombre business going on with such a blunt cut.

Of course, I had to doctor up Yara. I repeated my foundation trick but also pulled out a black eye shadow single to make the pink flesh lace disappear and clean up excess foundation spots.

If you don't want to waste the black eye shadow in one of your favorite palettes — just invest in a cheap single. Wet N Wild sells super cheap singles ($1.57, Walmart) that last forever.

This is the Yara wig after all my DIY tricks.

I wanted to take a million selfies in this beautiful angled bob wig. It's GORGEOUS and so different from my usual hair aesthetic.

Also, full disclosure: I already owned the Yara wig in black, but I got mine in a beauty supply store in NY. Here she is down below:

This black version has lasted beautifully, but at the beauty counter, I paid $60! Buying it on Amazon is definitely the way to go — since it's nearly half the price.

Since I love textured hair as much as straight wigs, I had to try this Outre Big Beautiful afro wig ($28.30, Amazon).

Can you believe it comes in 11 different colors on Amazon!? In an actual store, they would offer five of those *if* you're lucky. I chose this dark brown color to keep it natural.

The wig has so much volume that it didn't need any part customization — but I did have to tease it out with my fingers so the curls weren't so unrealistically defined.

I teased and pulled at the ends like this A LOT. I prefer for my wig curls to not look so perfect because it makes for a more natural look.

Here's the final look.

This curly wig could still use some additional customization. I would likely take a pair of scissors to trim it down just a bit — but I love how the curls look, the softness of the hair, and the VOLUME.

The final wig by Your Wigs ($21.98, Amazon) was where things got a tad tricky for me.

My first thought when I pulled this bouncy wig out of the pack was, Well this could go really well or really wrong.

Since there was no part to this wig, I didn't have to apply any makeup — but the big curls seemed WAY too floppy.

LOL. My first reaction to this curly wig? "I look like the fourth member of Dreamgirls."

But after some SERIOUS teasing with my fingers — this wig looked pretty presentable.

I still want to take a pair of scissors to this wig to cut it down for an edgier shape, but it's not butt ugly — even if it does still look a little Dreamgirls-esque.

This is vacation hair. I wouldn't wear this baby to work, but I would wear it down in Miami with an oversized bag, huge hoop earrings, a maxi dress, and sandals.

You just have to know the right occasions — and maybe order this wig in a lighter, fresher color. Dark black tends to offer a mature look by default. An off-black *or* brown choice of this wig would have been super clutch.

So which wig is the winner? Oh, it's obvious!

THE BLUE UNICORN!

Just look at how this baby movies. Look at how vibrant the color is. This wig is made with quality hair and I don't have to fry or dye my hair to get the color.

I'm in love and I still can't believe this luxurious looking thing was only $35. I'd call wig shopping on Amazon a HUGE success.

*goes to fill up cart again*
