I Tried The Goth Queen Liquid Lipstick Line That’s Better Than Kat Von D

When it comes to liquid lipsticks, Kat Von D Beauty has ALWAYS been the brand to beat. Kat's Everlasting line ($20, Sephora) has 44 shades (with coordinating liners), a decent formula, all at a luxurious-but-not-unattainable price point.

I've been all about KVD's liquid lipsticks for years β€” and until recently, I honestly thought there was no better brand, no better shade range, and no better formula out there.

I was wrong.

There's a goth queen-approved beauty brand that makes liquid lipsticks SO AMAZING, I've given up on every other tube I own. These are, hands down, the very best liquid lipsticks in the entire world.

These are Black Moon Cosmetics' liquid matte lipsticks. They're about to change your life.

This isn't the FULL line ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics), although I do own every shade β€” these are just my personal favorite colors that I wear the most often.

Shades, from left to right: Armageddon, Immortal, Sorrow, Selene, Genie, Sanguis, Wrath, Buried, and Sleepwalker.

Black Moon's liquid lipsticks are so amazing, they have replaced EVERY other liquid lipstick I own. If I want a super dark, streak-free oxblood? Oh yeah. That's covered.

Both me and myself are wearing liquid matte lipstick in Abyss ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics), and we both love it.

If you're a dark lip queen, you know FIRSTHAND how hard it is to find dark liquid lipsticks that are fully opaque with just one coat β€” so many, including Kat Von D's Vampira, require multiple layers of product, which looks cakey and feels heavy. All of Black Moon's dark matte shades apply flawlessly in just one sweep.

If I want a metallic lipstick that's *actually* metallic and long-lasting? Oh yeah β€” Black Moon has me covered.

Black Moon Cosmetics has a liquid to matte Black Metals line, which is the ONLY metallic liquid lipstick formula I have ever truly loved. In the selfie above, I'm wearing Armageddon ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics), a beautiful deep red with slight copper shimmer.

Unlike every other (disappointing) metallic out there, the Black Metal lipsticks exceed every expectation I've ever had. First, they are TRULY metallic β€” none of this frosty '80s nonsense. Second, they dry down and last all day β€” if I had a dollar for every "longwear" metallic lipstick that got all over my teeth, I'd be rich. Finally, they feel great! Truly! Not drying, not heavy, not cakey β€” every Black Metal shade is a pleasure to wear.

It's been a long time since I found a hot pink lipstick I liked, but then Genie came along, and EVERYTHING was different.

Genie ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics) is not only the most amazing bold fuchsia, it has the most beautiful purple shift IRL. I love it.

If I want the world's boldest, brightest, most stunning red, I look no further than Sanguis.

Look, I have tried some red liquid lipsticks in my life, but Sanguis ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics) is EASILY the best. The formula is perfect, I can eat and drink all night without it vanishing on me, and it looks astonishingly good on every person who has ever worn it. It's the perfect cool red, and you need it. The end.

And when I want a mauve-y nude? I look no further than my dream shade, Wrath.

Wrath ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics) is perfect however you wear it β€” blotted onto lips with a finger, as I've done here, or applied straight out of the tube with the applicator. It is a color that makes me think of slightly bruised fruit, which is to say it's the ultimate goth neutral and I LOVE it.

Wrath is also a similar color to another, slightly more infamous liquid lipstick shade. Because this is the sort of thing people often ask me, Wrath *is* very similar to Jeffree Star Cosmetics' Androgyny. Wrath is a tiny bit less purple and a little more brown, but overall, they're very similar.

So if you love the color Androgyny but feel conflicted about Star as a personality, Wrath could be just what you need.

Part of what makes Black Moon's liquid lipsticks so supreme is the applicator.

All the liquid lipsticks, including the Black Metals, have these unique applicators. The tip is rounded, but both sides are flat. This means product gets held on the flat face of the applicator, not in a blob on the tip, allowing you to swipe color on quickly, easily, and cleanly. Such a simple thing that really, truly pays off.

That's not all. The flocking β€” that's the fuzzy stuff that makes the applicator soft β€” is short and dense, which allows for a very precise line. This applicator is the best of all things, all in one easy design.

The tubes also have a locking mechanism β€” when you twist the cap on, you can feel a little "click" as it closes. That means your liquid lipsticks won't dry out and won't accidentally open in your bag, destroying everything you own!

This may be an extrmely true story. RIP, KVD Beauty liquid lipstick in Mother. RIP also, my bag.

Practically, that means all your Black Moon colors will remain absolutely IMMACULATE β€” bold, bright, beautiful. In a world of sub-par liquid lipsticks, this is a blessing from the beauty gods.

We've all had our hearts broken by extremely bright or extremely dark liquid lipsticks. Why do they have to look so good in the tube, but so patchy on our lips??

I very quickly swatched my favorite Black Moon liquid lipstick shades on producer Brittany Fowler's arm. One extremely quick swipe of each shade gave full, rich color, zero streaks, and no cakey product buildup. The entire arm of swatches dried in under two minutes, and washed clean with an oil cleanser β€” no scrubbing required.

Shades, from top to bottom: Armageddon, Immortal, Sorrow, Selene, Genie, Sanguis, Buried, Wrath, and Sleepwalker.

Just LOOK at how rich, thick, and juicy Buried, Wrath, and Sleepwalker are with one single swipe. That's unheard of.

Sleepwalker ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics) has EASILY surpassed KVD's Witches as my favorite black liquid lipstick, by the way. It's not drying, and it layers beautifully under gloss for that latex look!

And the sparkle of my favorite Black Metal shades, Immortal, Armageddon, and Sorrow CANNOT be denied.

($18 each, Black Moon Cosmetics)

Sorrow, the deep blue, is perhaps a little less obviously shiny than the others β€” but it makes up for it with the most COMFORTABLE wear time ever on the lips.

I felt like wearing Immortal the other day β€” the vampiest, most beautiful deep purple ever β€” and not only did it make me look like a goth queen dream, it immediately improved my mood.

You know that feeling you get when your lipstick is awesome and you KNOW it's awesome?

Yeah. That's how Immortal ($18, Black Moon Cosmetics) makes me feel.

And yes β€” Black Moon's line is all cruelty free, vegan, gluten free, AND paraben free.
