There's a reason Kat Von D and her prolific makeup brand are so popular, despite her many, many public controversies and criticisms.
She's been a celebrity for more than a decade, thanks to her hit reality TV show and a long, successful career in tattooing. For those of you who've only been following Kat Von D since the launch of Kat Von D Beauty in 2008, you have a lot of catching up to do.
Let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
Kat Von D launched Kat Von D Beauty in 2008.

But before that, she was known first and foremost as a world-class tattoo artist.

(No shit, she's held the world record for most tattoos given in 24 hours for the last 10 years.)

And if you knew who she was, it was because of TLC's hit reality shows 'Miami Ink" and "LA Ink."

Boy, were things different before KVD Beauty's conception.

If Kat Von D's current fashion sense is mod goth, her wardrobe back then was straight-up hair metal.

She wore vests as shirts!

And tube tops!

And animal prints!

She hung out with a very different crowd back then, too.

She had a few super famous boyfriends such as Steve-O (whom she dated again in 2016) and Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue.

And one of her best friends was Jeffree Star, who looked like this:
