‘That’s Just Disrespectful:’ Live-In Nanny Shares the 5 Things She Refuses To Do

A part-time live-in nanny in Utah went viral for sharing on TikTok five things she refuses to do as a nanny. The nanny's name is Brenna, and she goes by @braonain1 on TikTok. The video in questions now has more than 2 million views and more than 400,000 likes.

Many TikTok users reached out, either relating to her nanny struggles or applauding boundary setting, though a few users seemed to disagree. Brenna shares a lot of content about being a nanny, as well as day in the life videos and advice for other people who nanny.

Her first rule is that she’s not a housekeeper.

Brenna starts her video by explaining, “These are things I will not do as a nanny of five years, who currently works as a part time live-in nanny.” Her first rule is that she is a nanny, not a housekeeper.

“I will only clean up after the kids and I, unload the dishes, do the kids' laundry, and just pick up after ourselves,” Brenna says. She adds that if she watches a baby, it’s a little bit different and she offers more cleaning help.

The second requirement is that she has to be able to take kids out of the house.

“I will not work for families who do not let me take the kids out,” she says.

She elaborated on the reason why: “I personally do not know how to entertain the kids in the house for 10 hours.” In the video clips, Brenna is seen going to Starbucks and Chick-fil-A with kids.

Payments have to be received on time, and no extra kids are allowed without extra payment.

Brenna proceeds to share two more of her requirements. “No. 3 — I will not accept being paid not on time. It’s just disrespectful in all honesty.” Brenna elaborates a bit more on this rule, saying, “and a lot of nanny families do it and I’ve had it happen so many times before.”

“I will not lower my rates to settle your needs. I will find somebody to pay me what I deserve”, Brenna shares. “I will not watch extra kids, including your friends or your families' kids, unless you wanna pay me a lot more.”

Her final rule is that she won’t work outside her hours.

Lastly, Brenna shares one more rule while she applies mascara and drinks her coffee.

“No. 5 — I will not work outside my hours. It’s my time off, bye," she says. In the caption on her video she wrote, “Don’t be salty I got a lot more on my list of things I won’t do #nanny.”

Many TikTok users offered their own nanny stories in the comments on Brenna’s video.

One user commented, “I LOVE the taking the kids out rule because HOW do you expect me to work a 12 hour day & not leave the house at least once?!?!?!?”

“When I was a nanny I worked 45 hours a week (no overtime pay) and I was never allowed to take the kids anywhere it was AWFUL," wrote another person.

A few people, however, disagreed with Brenna. One user commented, “I would not hire someone with your attitude. if you're a live in you should treat the house as your own- ie — clean up after yourself.”

“Agree with everything except leaving the house. It’s a liability. Car crash, kid lost at store, etc.” another person commented.
