Social media has some unwritten rules that you have to live by or you’ll be at the center of negative comments before you even know what’s happening. For example, don’t overshare about your marriage, don’t post photos of your kids in their car seats, and please, for the love of the internet gods, do not post a gender reveal if you aren’t ready for the backlash you may receive because of your in-the-moment reaction.
Unfortunately, one mom did not get the memo on that last one when she shared her gender reveal on TikTok. The mom, Katelynn Snell, shared a video of her reaction during her gender reveal party with her husband and two sons. It’s clear from her immediate scream that she had hoped for a daughter after two boys. Now, the internet has thoughts about her reaction and why she would even have a gender reveal if she was dead set on having a girl.

The mom says she will love her son despite her ‘gender disappointment.’
In the video, Katelynn and her husband open the cabinet doors of an armoire. It’s clear, judging by the blues and pinks in the video, that if the contents are blue, it means she’s having a boy, and if they are pink, she has a little girl bun in her oven. When they open the doors, there is nothing but blues and some greens mixed in, which tells us that Katelynn is indeed having a boy.
She immediately screams a long “No!” and then hurries off-camera. Her husband and sons look a little confused, but they seem unmoved by the results of the gender reveal. In the comments section under the video, Katelynn wrote that, despite having “gender disappointment” at the reveal of being pregnant with a boy, she will love her son regardless.
But you’d better believe that the other TikTok users didn’t let her off that easily. Some of them even replied to the comments under the video to say they don’t believe gender disappointment is even real.
“Gender disappointment is not real, at all,” someone commented. “Being told your baby has no heartbeat disappointment is real. Be grateful.”
Another user wrote, “You can be disappointed, but a public meltdown as a mother of three is crazy.”

People don’t understand why they had a gender reveal to begin with.
Other people who watched the gender reveal and do understand gender disappointment don’t understand why Katelynn would even share her gender reveal or have one at all if she was so set on having a girl. She had to have known her disappointment would show, and now the internet knows it too.
“Gender disappointment is real and valid,” a user commented. “What isn’t is having a public event and filming and posting yourself literally screaming and crying in disappointment. Your son will see this someday. He will hear about it. he will always remember how upset you were that he wasn’t a girl.”
Another person chimed in: “I understand gender disappointment, but why do gender reveal if you know there’s a 50/50 chance you will be this disappointed?”
Other users agreed that it doesn’t make sense to have a gender reveal if there is a legitimate 50% chance the results won’t be what you want.
Someone else wrote under the video: “Gender disappointment is understandable, but why have a gender reveal like this if you would only be satisfied with one of the two options. Weird.”
“Why do people do gender reveals if they know they’re going to be disappointed with a particular result,” another viewer agreed. “It doesn’t make sense in the slightest.”
While some of those who watched the gender reveal agree that gender disappointment can happen, and they understand the mom’s reaction, others still don’t understand the point of having a gender reveal party and then posting a video like this.
Among the other critics, another one added, “When there’s a 50% chance of getting something you clearly don’t want, why bother?”
